Long-term Tutor needed for British family split UK-USA
£147k per yearTutors International
A long-term, highly skilled Tutor is sought to provide educational support to a British family who divide their time between London and Florida. The children will attend the American School in London during the autumn semester each year before relocating to Florida for the spring semester, where they will continue their studies remotely under the guidance of the Tutor. The role will commence in January 2027 and is expected to continue for several years, on the basis of 6-month stints between January and June each year. The family seeks an exceptional educator who combines the skills of an experienced classroom teacher, curriculum planner, and private Tutor. The successful candidate will be adaptable, engaging, enthusiastic, and capable of transforming the children’s academic programme into a rich, dynamic, and highly personalised educational experience. The ability to contribute to languages, music, and the arts is highly desirable. Students The family have four children aged between 5 and 12. The children are exceptionally bright, intellectually curious, and highly motivated learners who possess a genuine love of learning. They are confident self-starters who enjoy exploring new ideas, creating projects, and pursuing topics of interest independently, while also working collaboratively as siblings. They absorb new information readily and respond particularly well to engaging and intellectually stimulating teaching. The eldest child combines strong academic ability with considerable creative talent. They are particularly gifted in the arts, enjoying creative writing and poetry, and they thrive when encouraged to make connections between different subjects. They enjoy intellectual challenges and respond well to opportunities for independent thought, discussion, and exploration. As they approach the secondary years of their education, maintaining academic rigour while continuing to nurture their creativity will be especially important. The second child also enjoys creative pursuits and is enthusiastic about languages, particularly Italian. They possess a warm sense of humour, a thoughtful personality, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. They respond particularly well to positive relationships and encouragement and will benefit from a Tutor who can balance structure with warmth. Like the older sibling, they too enjoy music and are drawn to guitar and piano. The third child is academically advanced for their age and continues to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and maturity. They enjoy engaging lessons and thrive when taught by someone who establishes a respectful relationship while maintaining high expectations. Like their older siblings, they are artistic and musical and would like to start to learn drums in addition to guitar and piano. The youngest child, now five years old, is increasingly ready to participate in more formal educational activities. They display the same curiosity, imagination, and enthusiasm for learning that characterise their older siblings and will be included in selected elements of the programme as appropriate. Reading has become a central part of the children's daily lives and educational routine. They typically begin their academic day with dedicated reading time and collectively read extensively, often completing at least one book each week each. The family places enormous value on the children's love of reading and wishes this enthusiasm to remain a cornerstone of their education. The successful Tutor should therefore be someone who appreciates literature, encourages wide and varied reading, and is able to sustain and deepen the children's enjoyment of books as they grow older. The children enjoy chess, creative projects, problem-solving activities, music, languages, and artistic pursuits. They have inherited strong artistic instincts from their mother and strong mathematical aptitude from their father. The family environment is warm, supportive, and intellectually stimulating. The children enjoy spending time together and with their parents and are accustomed to engaging conversations, travel, and a broad range of cultural experiences. Role of the Tutor The primary purpose of this role is to ensure continuity and excellence in the children’s education during the period each year when the family is based in Florida. The Tutor will assume primary responsibility for delivering and supporting the school curriculum remotely during the spring semester, ensuring that academic standards are maintained and that the children remain fully aligned with their peers in London. The successful candidate must be considerably more than a conventional Tutor. The family seeks an experienced educator with strong classroom teaching experience and a thorough understanding of curriculum planning, assessment, resource development, testing for mastery, and educational record-keeping. The Tutor must be capable of interpreting school requirements, designing engaging learning programmes around them, monitoring progress rigorously, and ensuring that each child receives both challenge and support at the appropriate level. The role will involve teaching the children individually and in small groups, differentiating instruction carefully according to age, ability, and learning style. The Tutor should be capable of identifying gaps in understanding, adapting resources where necessary, and extending the children well beyond the minimum expectations of the curriculum. The family values academic excellence but is equally committed to preserving curiosity, creativity, and a genuine enjoyment of learning. One of the key attractions of this role is the opportunity to use Florida as an extension of the classroom. The Tutor will be expected to incorporate local resources and experiences into the educational programme, drawing upon museums, galleries, beaches, marine environments, parks, historical sites, and cultural institutions to enrich learning. The family would also welcome educational excursions elsewhere within Florida and, where appropriate, further afield within the United States. The ideal Tutor will be able to transform real-world experiences into meaningful educational opportunities that bring the curriculum to life. Languages remain an important component of the family’s long-term educational aspirations. The Tutor should be fluent or near-fluent in either French or Italian and possess a good working knowledge of the other language. The family’s priorities in this area may evolve over time, but they remain keen for the children to continue developing strong language skills alongside their core academic studies. Art and music continue to play an important role in the children’s lives. The Tutor should have a good understanding of music theory and be able to play an instrument or sing confidently. The eldest child continues to pursue music seriously, and the family would welcome a Tutor who could contribute to her musical development and encourage participation from the younger children through singing, percussion, or other collaborative activities. The Tutor should be physically active and willing to incorporate sport and outdoor activity into the children’s routine. The family believes strongly in maintaining a healthy balance between academic work, creative pursuits, and physical wellbeing. The successful candidate will therefore combine intellectual depth with energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine enjoyment of working with children. The family anticipates that the majority of the role will be based in Florida and therefore strongly prefers candidates who already possess the legal right to live and work in the United States. While visa sponsorship may be possible for an exceptional candidate, the ideal Tutor will be able to move seamlessly between the United Kingdom and the United States and will have experience operating comfortably within both educational and cultural environments. An Anglo-American background, or significant professional experience in both countries, would be particularly advantageous given the family's desire to combine the strengths of the American and British educational systems. The role requires a highly organised individual who is capable of maintaining excellent records, communicating effectively with parents and schools, and adapting calmly to changing circumstances. Flexibility, professionalism, creativity, and warmth will all be essential qualities. The Tutor should be someone who can relate to all four children and remain endlessly patient with all the children even when all four are working together. Hours, Holidays, Accommodation and Travel The Tutor will engage in a standard 40-hour working week during periods of active engagement with the family. The exact distribution of hours will vary according to the children's academic requirements, extracurricular commitments, and family schedule. The role is expected to be most intensive between January and June each year when the family is based in Florida and the children are studying remotely. The Tutor will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week, normally at the weekend, although flexibility will be required to accommodate family plans and occasional schedule changes. The Tutor will have a minimum of 4.5 weeks off over each 6-month period, to be taken at times agreed upon with the family. The Tutor will be flexible with respect to any changes in schedule, be they travel-related or otherwise and will adapt accordingly. The Client will strive to give up to two weeks’ notice of any planned alterations. The family will provide suitable accommodation during periods when the Tutor is working with them in Florida. Accommodation will be furnished and of an appropriate standard. A car will also be provided where required. There may be occasional travel associated with the role, including journeys between London and Florida and educational excursions within the United States. All reasonable work-related travel expenses will be covered by the Client. The successful candidate will be able to offer considerably more than the minimum requirements of the position and will serve as an outstanding role model for the children. They will be educated, polished, intellectually curious, and possess excellent personal values and manners. The Tutor must be a fit, healthy non-smoker with an active lifestyle and a genuine enthusiasm for the outdoors. They should be capable of making the most of their surroundings to enhance educational opportunities and inspire the children’s curiosity about the world around them.
