Job Title: Programming Department Supervisor

Job Description

The Programming Department Supervisor leads the programming function for machine tools, ensuring accurate and safe programs that produce high-quality detail parts. This role provides strategic direction for the programming team, standardizes processes and documentation, and partners closely with leadership to drive operational excellence, meet deadlines, and improve throughput in a state-of-the-art machine shop environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall direction, leadership, and day-to-day management of the Programming department.
• Create and document standardized setup sheets, file structures, and all other departmental operations to ensure consistency and efficiency.
• Develop and document standard workholding and machining processes that are cutting-edge and aligned with world-class manufacturing practices.
• Track priorities and determine overtime schedules to ensure timely completion of programming work and production commitments.
• Assist quality control by providing datasets and supporting dataset translations to maintain accuracy and quality standards.
• Serve as a backup programming resource during overtime situations or when additional support is needed.
• Support the shop during unanticipated events, helping to resolve issues and maintain workflow continuity.
• Assist in estimating job costs by leveraging machining, tooling, and programming expertise.
• Partner with leadership, including business development, quality assurance, and production, to drive solutions and meet critical deadlines.
• Mentor and coach a team of approximately three programmers, expanding their skill sets and supporting professional development.
• Create and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for programming and related processes.
• Update legacy programs to improve performance, reliability, and alignment with current standards.
• Collaborate with sales on new opportunities, advising on how to execute programming and machining strategies to meet customer requirements.
• Manage the programming team to ensure on-time execution of deliverables, including performance coaching, documentation of performance issues, and, when necessary, termination decisions.
• Challenge existing processes, push the pace of work, and drive continuous improvement to shift the status quo and enhance departmental performance.
• Conduct or participate in gemba walks and other process-improvement activities within the machine shop environment.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 10 years of machining, tool design, and programming experience.
• Thorough understanding of machine tools and their capabilities.
• Experience working with CAD/CAM and CNC machines in a production environment.
• Proven ability to combine people leadership and process optimization to improve throughput.
• Prior management experience leading a team to successful outcomes.
• Working knowledge of MasterCAM, NX, and/or Catia.
• Hands-on experience with NC programming in a machine shop environment.
• Proficiency in CNC programming for mills and lathes.
• Ability to create, document, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Strong organizational skills to track priorities and manage overtime schedules.
• Effective communication skills to collaborate with leadership, quality, production, and sales teams.
• Capability to mentor and coach programmers, including performance management.
• Problem-solving skills to support the shop during unanticipated events and drive solutions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience performing gemba walks or similar continuous improvement activities in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience in estimating job costs for machining and programming projects.
• Familiarity with both mill and lathe operations and related programming requirements.
• Comfort working with datasets and dataset translations to support quality control.
• Experience updating legacy programs and modernizing existing processes.
• Ability to work effectively in a state-of-the-art machine shop with advanced equipment and technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to challenge existing processes and drive change in a production setting.

Work Environment

Work takes place in both office and manufacturing areas of the facility. Time in the manufacturing area may require the use of safety glasses and hearing protection, and may involve exposure to heat, cold, dust, dirt, noise, odors, fumes, and vapors from coolant. The environment is a state-of-the-art machine shop with advanced CNC machinery and related equipment, focused on high-precision production and continuous improvement practices.

This is a Permanent position based out of Everett, WA.

The pay range for this position is $140000.00 - $170000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
