About the Role

Ellington Mechanical is looking for an experienced Commercial Sheet Metal Foreman to lead HVAC ductwork installation crews on commercial construction projects throughout the DC, Maryland, and surrounding region.

This is a hands-on field leadership position for someone who can take ownership of a commercial ductwork scope from layout through completion.

The right candidate should be able to review mechanical drawings, determine how ductwork should be installed, lay out the work, organize manpower, coordinate with other trades, anticipate material needs, and keep the crew productive and on schedule.

We are specifically looking for someone who has already run commercial sheet metal or ductwork crews , not simply an experienced installer looking to move into their first leadership position.

Because Ellington is a smaller company, this position also requires someone who is comfortable with personal accountability, changing field conditions, and occasionally adjusting priorities when projects or emergency work require it .

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise commercial sheet metal and ductwork installation crews
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, details, and coordination drawings
• Independently lay out ductwork locations, routing, elevations, penetrations, and equipment connections
• Assign daily work to mechanics, installers, helpers, and apprentices
• Plan manpower and work sequencing to maintain production and project schedules
• Coordinate ductwork installation with plumbing, electrical, sprinkler, structural, and other trades
• Identify conflicts between drawings and actual field conditions before installation
• Communicate RFIs, field changes, scheduling issues, and material needs to project management
• Plan materials, fittings, hangers, equipment, and other requirements ahead of installation
• Supervise installation of rectangular, round, and spiral ductwork
• Oversee supply, return, exhaust, and outside-air duct systems
• Coordinate installation of VAV boxes, dampers, louvers, diffusers, AHUs, rooftop units, and related commercial HVAC equipment
• Maintain high standards of workmanship and installation quality
• Ensure crews follow jobsite safety requirements
• Coordinate directly with general contractors, superintendents, project managers, and other trade foremen
• Manage assigned work through rough-in, equipment connections, trim-out, punch list, and project completion
• Respond to occasional emergency or schedule-driven work when necessary

Required Qualifications

• Significant commercial HVAC or sheet metal construction experience
• Previous experience as a Commercial Sheet Metal Foreman, Ductwork Foreman, Lead Mechanic, or equivalent field leader
• Experience directly supervising commercial ductwork installation crews
• Ability to independently read commercial mechanical drawings and blueprints
• Ability to lay out ductwork from drawings and actual field conditions
• Strong commercial sheet metal and ductwork installation knowledge
• Experience coordinating work with other construction trades
• Ability to plan manpower, materials, and daily field production
• Strong understanding of jobsite safety
• Ability to communicate effectively with crews, project managers, superintendents, and company ownership
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
• Ability to climb ladders and work on rooftops as required
• Comfortable working in a smaller-company environment where flexibility, pace, and personal accountability matter

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of commercial sheet metal or HVAC construction experience
• 3+ years running commercial ductwork crews
• Experience on larger commercial projects such as hospitals, schools, government facilities, office buildings, data centers, or similar facilities
• Journeyman-level sheet metal experience or apprenticeship completion
• Familiarity with SMACNA standards
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
• Scissor lift or boom lift certification
