NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR AN OPEN POSITION The Village of Channahon (Village) is a thriving community with a population of 13,383 (as of the 2020 Census) located 45 miles southwest of Chicago, just west of Joliet and east of Morris in southwest Will County and eastern Grundy County. Channahon encompasses portions of Channahon, Troy, Aux Sable, Goose Lake, and Saratoga Townships. The Village employs approximately 90 full time, part time, elected, appointed and seasonal employees in 5 departments. OPEN POSITION DEADLINE GIS Technician Open until filled SALARY RANGE $62,000 – $86,800 DOQ POSITION SUMMARY This is a responsible technical and administrative support role collecting, integrating, and updating data in the Village’s Geographic Information System (GIS). Work involves core responsibility for spatial data collection and database integration into the Village’s centralized GIS platform. Under the administrative direction of the Assistant Village Administrator, the role is executed with considerable technical independence, coordinating directly with various levels of the Public Works and Community Development departments to deliver high‑quality data, application support, and visual exhibits across all municipal operations. POSITION RESPONSIBILITY This position participates actively in the long‑term development, maintenance, and strategic utilization of the Village’s GIS network, including routine field data collection; performs complex geographic analysis and designs professional map products in both digital and physical formats. Responsible for creating and integrating new database sources into the master system; collaborates with internal staff and external consultants to ensure the ongoing structural development of the Village’s base map and essential thematic layers, including Utilities, Zoning, and Land Use. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited two‑year or four‑year college, university, or technical trade school with coursework emphasizing GIS, CAD, Geography, Surveying, or a closely related field. Demonstrated technical experience in GIS platforms and database information systems usage, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience providing the necessary competency baseline. Technical Knowledge and GIS Proficiency: Possesses a thorough technical knowledge of geographic information systems software, hardware configurations, data standards, and professional terminology. Practical knowledge and field experience using GPS technologies and data collection rigs for high‑accuracy asset capturing. Software Familiarity and Analytical Skills: Strong working proficiency with ESRI products, with specific competency in ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, and associated mobile cloud applications. Strong logical and spatial analytical skills, with the ability to interpret technical problems and present clear, precise results in written, visual, and verbal reports. Sector Knowledge and Operational Abilities: Practical understanding of local government environments, municipal workflows, and public utility geographic information infrastructure needs. Proven ability to independently plan, schedule, and execute comprehensive data harvesting schedules and multi‑layer system integration activities. Program Evaluation: Competency to evaluate active GIS performance benchmarks and suggest concrete areas for system optimization or workflow automation.
