Overview Position Type Part Time Category Student This position is only open to current Pacific University Students Title of Position: FWS Outdoor Leadership Gear Guru Department Name, location of department: Outdoor Leadership Program Mission: The Outdoor Leadership Program inspires a spirit of growth and exploration by humbly and skillfully leading others on outdoor adventures that empower, challenge, and connect people to nature and one another. Job Duties and Responsibilities: The Gear Guru is an organized, enthusiastic, and dependable student who helps create a strong outdoor community by supporting Outdoor Leadership classes and trips. This position plays a key role in ensuring students and instructors have the correct equipment, properly prepared and cared for, for each adventure. The Gear Guru also helps spread the outdoor stoke on campus through involvement with the Kinesiology Department, Outdoor Leadership Program, Student Wellbeing, and outdoor trips. Time Commitment: Approximately 2-4 hours per week, with additional on-call time as needed and participation in select weekend trips. Workload will vary throughout the semester, with occasional weeks requiring additional hours. Wage rate: $16.80/hr Qualifications Qulifications: Qualifies for federal work study funding for the 2025-26 academic year (preferred, but not required) Is enthusiastic about learning and working with outdoor equipment Is organized, detail-oriented, and dependable Is a creative and practical problem-solver Communicates clearly and works well as part of a team Takes initiative and can work independently Is flexible and available to help with trip preparation Is open to giving and receiving feedback Recognizes the importance of social location and privilege when working with people from diverse identities and experiences Represents Outdoor Leadership and Student Wellbeing in a positive and professional manner Primary Responsibilities: Gear Inventory & Management: Conduct an annual gear inventory and additional inventories as needed Label new equipment and maintain accurate inventory records in FileMaker Check first-aid kits and remove expired medications Maintain familiarity with the location and organization of Student Wellbeing, Outdoor Pursuits, and Outdoor Leadership gear Trip Preparation & Gear Logistics Coordinate with the Outdoor Leadership Professor to identify trips requiring gear preparation Pull and organize group and individual equipment for assigned trips Complete trip pack-outs by mid-week prior to departure or before the class meets to use the equipment Check gear in and out using established Google Sheets systems Use and maintain current trip pack-out checklists Gear Care & Problem Solving Clean, inspect, and return trip equipment within two days of a trip's return Identify damaged or malfunctioning equipment and work with the Outdoor Leadership Professor to research repair or replacement options Assist with organizing, storing, and relocating equipment as needed, including moving larger equipment such as sea kayaks Communication & Coordination Meet with the Outdoor Leadership Professor approximately twice per month to review inventory, gear needs, and upcoming trip pack-outs Communicate proactively about missing, damaged, or needed equipment Professional Development This position provides hands-on experience in: Inventory and equipment management Strategic organization and logistics Outdoor equipment care and maintenance Independent problem-solving and decision-making Communication, teamwork, and leadership Supporting safe and successful outdoor learning experiences #J-18808-Ljbffr Pacific University
