Agency Department of Transportation Division Job classification title: Electronics Technician I (S). Position Number: NC09. Grade: NC09. Description of Work This position provides technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment with emphasis on traffic control equipment and related devices for Division X. Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by the supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Responsibilities Installing traffic signal equipment Wiring detectors Installing and wiring controllers Tracing electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble Dismantling and reassembling components Replacing worn or faulty parts Maintaining proper records of all signal work accomplished Keeping accurate records of time worked and materials used via computer Additional Expectations Ability to lift and move up to 80+ pounds Operate aerial bucket truck up to 50+ feet in height without accommodations Understand and follow oral and written instructions Comply with all safety rules and policies Perform manual and physical labor involved in installation and removal of traffic signals Work in environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat, noise, dust, asphalt, traffic, and heavy construction Position is subject to emergency callback, overtime, and non‑traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights, and times of emergency Driving Requirements The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL‑required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire. Either possession of a current Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire or obtain it through on‑the‑job training within 360 days. Prospective drivers must meet the following standards: No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug‑related traffic offense within the past five years Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (or, for adjacent state residents, a valid driver’s license from their state) When a driver applicant has possessed an out‑of‑state driver’s license in the past ten years, the record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained and provided Pre‑Employment Requirements Pre‑employment drug testing is required Release form (ALCDRG‑01) and background statement (ALCDRG‑06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post‑offer employment evaluation Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools, materials, and test equipment used in electrical/electronic trade Ability to diagnose source of equipment failures Ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams Knowledge of the National Electric Code Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions Minimum Education and Experience Associate’s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission. Salary Salary Grade: NC09; Range: $41,206 - $72,113.
