Fleet Maintenance Technician

Position Summary The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of skilled work in support of the City’s Public Works Fleet, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, inspection, servicing, and operational support. The position also provides support to the City’s Transportation Division. Position Scope This is a maintenance support position responsible for assisting in the upkeep, servicing, and operational readiness of City vehicles and equipment. The position also supports the Transportation Division, assisting when directed by the Manager to operate the City shuttle buses, and providing vehicle operation and transportation services to ensure continuity of Departmental and City-wide functions. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks. Responsibilities Uses hand tools and equipment and a variety of machines safely and efficiently to assist with repair tasks or general maintenance. Operates and maintains fleet maintenance equipment or power tools, as well as City Vehicles as assigned. Performs general maintenance on City vehicles, including washing, waxing, and preventative maintenance. Performs daily inspection of vehicles and cleans as necessary. Assists with monitoring vendor contracts, inspecting their work and providing input into performance. Prepares reports as required. Controls materials through supply ordering and inventory. Responds to and resolves complaints related to housekeeping or maintenance. Supports the Transportation Division by operating City shuttle buses when directed by the Manager, ensuring safe and timely transport of passengers. Performs any other related job duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of safe vehicle operation and transportation procedures. Knowledge of fleet maintenance program responsibilities and activities, equipment, and practices. Skill in performing preventive maintenance. Ability to operate City vehicles, power tools, and equipment including a radio. Ability to perform skilled and administrative work using some independent judgment. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve various vehicle mechanical/maintenance issues. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Required Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in Fleet and/or maintenance. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Licenses and/or Certifications A valid Florida driver's license is required. Valid Florida Commercial driver’s license CDL B with air brakes preferred. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions The essential job functions of this position will require the employee to perform the following physical activities. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additional Information There is a one-year probationary period.
