Position Summary

The Police Officer is a law enforcement officer position working patrol in the Muskogee Public School District. The best candidate will be self-motivated, require minimal supervision, and promote high standards of honesty, integrity, and fairness. Police officer must also believe in an organizational culture that fosters teamwork.

CLEET certified officers will have primary consideration.

Qualifications/Job Requirements
  • Must be at least twenty-one years of age and be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must have a valid Oklahoma driver's license
  • Have no felony or major misdemeanor convictions
  • Have no domestic abuse convictions
  • Must have no recent involvement with illicit drug use/abuse
  • Have no pending criminal charges
  • Must have a high degree of ethical standards and moral character
  • Must have sound judgment and the ability to think quickly
  • Must be available to be called out in the event of emergencies
  • Pass a physical agility test
  • Must be able to perform police duties without any physical restrictions or special accommodations
  • Must be willing to work either a day or night shift
  • Must present before a hiring board and complete a written exercise, and be favorably recommended by the board for employment
  • Must pass a background investigation
  • Must pass a psychological assessment test
  • Must pass a drug screening test
  • Must pass a polygraph examination
  • All applicants must complete a Personnel History Statement.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as a visible and active law enforcement officer on school property dealing with law-related areas such as drugs, traffic, trespassing, fighting and thefts.
  • Take law enforcement action to protect against unwanted intruders.
  • Identify and prevent (through counseling and referral) delinquent behavior, including substance abuse.
  • Make arrests when necessary to protect students, staff and school property.
  • Respond to calls on crimes against person or property in progress, intrusion/fire alarms and report crimes that have already occurred.
  • Perform preliminary investigation at the scene (e.g. gather and preserve evidence, take statements).
  • Prepare written reports, maintain daily logs and obtain and serve arrest and search warrants as necessary.
  • Work closely with the principal and staff of the school to foster a better understanding of the law enforcement function to maintain a secure learning environment.
  • Proactively work with the school's leadership team and collaborate with school's administrative team on safety protocols and procedures
  • Conduct courses and workshops for students, staff and parents to promote social awareness, relationship skills, self-management, self-awareness and responsible decision making.
  • Assists school administrators in emergency crisis planning and building security matters.
  • Works with guidance counselors and other support staff to assist students and to provide services to students involved in situations where school policies have been violated and where referrals to service agencies are necessary. Build working relationships with each school's staff, as well as with student and parent groups.
  • Coordinate with the school administration.
  • Is responsible for law enforcement and security activity at extra-curricular events as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain a legible, concise and understandable record of activities.
  • On rotating shifts, patrols assigned beat to aid in preventing crime and to enforce Federal, State and City laws.
  • Observes, reports and acts upon conditions conducive to crime and danger such as checking buildings, assisting other officers, enforcing traffic, making arrests, transporting prisoners and investigating crime(s).
  • Using own judgment, determines the nature of a call, investigates the circumstances and takes the necessary or prudent action. Provides assistance to the public in emergency and non-emergency situations; administers first aid and requests appropriate medical response; performs crisis intervention in sensitive situations and domestic disputes; educates the public on laws and ordinances; assists citizens with complaints and inquiries and directs them to the appropriate authority.
  • Respond to emergency radio calls and investigate accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing persons, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc; takes appropriate law enforcement action.
  • Prepare a variety of written and oral reports.
  • Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, victims and suspects and provides feedback to the appropriate people concerning case status; collects and documents evidence.
  • Appear in court, and is available to testify in matters which the officer has knowledge of whether it be criminal or civil. Maintains proficiency in the use of police related equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in both office and field settings on a rotating shift schedule in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.
