Maintenance Mechanic

This role focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing production equipment in a dairy manufacturing environment. The maintenance mechanic ensures equipment operates safely and efficiently by performing preventive maintenance, addressing mechanical and electrical issues, and supporting continuous improvement in safety, quality, and productivity.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive maintenance on production equipment, including pneumatics, motors, hydraulics, pumps, and conveyors.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical issues to quickly identify and resolve equipment problems.
  • Provide emergency and unscheduled repairs of production equipment during production to minimize downtime.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance repairs of production equipment during planned machine service windows.
  • Prepare and set up machinery for scheduled production runs to ensure smooth startup and operation.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals, blueprints, schematics, and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
  • Use tools such as voltmeters and other diagnostic equipment to perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs as needed.
  • Keep the shop area and production areas clean and orderly after completing repairs.
  • Ensure proper Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are followed as outlined by regulatory requirements, including those from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
  • Comply with OSHA safety and health rules at all times while performing maintenance activities.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining plant safety awareness by following established procedures and promoting safe work practices.
  • Support organizational priorities by actively looking for ways to improve safety, product quality, waste reduction, and overall productivity.
  • Maintain a strong sense of urgency during operations and maintenance activities to support production needs.
  • Represent the organization and yourself in a professional manner in all interactions.
  • Be proactive in identifying maintenance needs and potential equipment issues before they result in downtime.

Essential Skills:

  • Hands-on experience as a maintenance mechanic, maintenance technician, or in a similar maintenance repair role.
  • Practical knowledge of pneumatics, motors, hydraulics, pumps, and conveyors.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on production equipment.
  • Experience using tools such as voltmeters for basic electrical troubleshooting and electrical repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, equipment manuals, and work orders.
  • Understanding and application of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in a production environment.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA safety and health rules.
  • Capability to maintain cleanliness in shop and production areas after repairs.
  • Sense of urgency and strong problem-solving skills in a fast-paced production setting.
  • Willingness and ability to work 2nd or 3rd shift, including overtime as needed.
  • For 2nd shift roles, approximately 5 years of maintenance experience is preferred.
  • For 3rd shift roles, approximately 12 years of maintenance experience is acceptable.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

  • Electrical knowledge and troubleshooting experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with electrical troubleshooting using schematics and diagnostic tools is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a food or dairy production environment is a plus.
  • Familiarity with heavy equipment maintenance is beneficial.
  • Ability to support safety, quality, and productivity initiatives within a manufacturing plant.
  • Willingness to take and pass an electrical test as part of the hiring process.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work professionally with production and maintenance teams.
  • Motivation to learn, grow, and expand skills through training and on-the-job experience.

Work Environment:

This role is based in a dairy production environment that is not a freezer setting. You will work around production machinery and equipment, including pneumatics, motors, hydraulics, pumps, and conveyors. The position operates on 2nd shift (approximately 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.) or 3rd shift (approximately 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Saturday through Wednesday), with a high level of activity and frequent opportunities for overtime due to strong production demand. You will use tools such as voltmeters and work with mechanical and basic electrical systems while adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices and OSHA safety standards. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and professionalism, with an expectation that work areas remain clean and organized after repairs.

Job Type & Location:

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of COMMERCE, CA.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be subject to specific elections, plan, or program terms.
