Job Description Title: Middle School Social Studies Teacher Salary: $62,847.97 - $118,336.00 (in accordance with MPS Unit A salary schedule) Qualifications: Degree in a content‑specific field. Deep understanding of evidence‑based practices for teaching in Social Studies and best practices for assessing student progress toward achievement of state standards. Excellent communication skills. Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) and fingerprint check. Current Massachusetts licensure in subject matter (required). Citizenship, residency, or work visa required. Position Type: Full‑time Job Categories: Classroom Teacher > Social Studies: General Responsibilities Plans Curriculum and Instruction Draws on content standards of relevant curriculum frameworks to plan sequential units, individual lessons, and learning activities that build cumulative knowledge. Uses results of formal and informal assessments and knowledge of human development to select teaching strategies and learning activities appropriate to the discipline, age, English proficiency level, and cognitive levels taught. Identifies prerequisite skills, concepts, and vocabulary needed for the learning activities. Plans lessons with clear objectives and measurable outcomes. Integrates students with disabilities into general education classrooms using IEP information. Supports students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, strengths, and challenges through instructional planning, materials, and engagement approaches. Delivers Effective Instruction Makes learning objectives clear to students at the beginning of the lesson. Communicates clearly in writing, speaking, and through visual and contextual aids. Uses engaging strategies to begin a new unit or lesson. Builds on students’ prior knowledge and experience. Employs a variety of content‑based and content‑oriented teaching techniques ranging from direct instruction and practice to discussion, problem‑solving, cooperative learning, and research projects. Utilizes reading and writing strategies to address learning objectives. Applies instructional technology appropriately. Implements strategies that make content accessible to English language learners. Assigns homework or practice that furthers learning and assesses it. Provides regular and frequent feedback on student progress. Offers varied opportunities for students to demonstrate competence. Accurately measures student achievement and progress, using results to plan further instruction. Translates evaluations into records that convey achievement levels to students, parents, and school personnel. Manages Classroom Climate and Operation Creates and maintains a safe, collaborative environment that values diversity and motivates students to meet high standards. Designs a physical setting suitable for a range of learning activities. Maintains appropriate standards of behavior, mutual respect, and safety. Manages classroom routines and procedures efficiently, minimizing instructional loss. Promotes Equity Encourages all students to believe effort leads to achievement. Works to ensure all students achieve without exception. Meets Professional Responsibilities Understanding of legal and moral responsibilities. Conveys enthusiasm for the academic discipline to students. Collaborates with colleagues to improve instruction, assessment, and student achievement.
