Associate Attorney, Toxic Exposure & Health

Overview Earthjustice seeks an Associate Attorney for the Toxic Exposure & Health Program. The attorney will collaborate with other litigators, policy experts, scientists and communications teams to advance legal advocacy aimed at protecting people—especially those most exposed to chemicals—by placing environmental justice and science at the center of U.S. chemicals policy. Responsibilities Investigate, develop, and prosecute administrative appeals and litigation, including factual investigation, legal research, case development, record review, client engagement, expert evidence and witness development, motions practice, brief writing, oral advocacy, and appellate advocacy. Work closely with Earthjustice attorneys, scientists, and professional staff to advance litigation and advocacy for a diverse set of clients. Participate in the full range of tasks involved in complex litigation: factual investigation, legal research and memo writing, drafting pleadings and briefs, and oral advocacy. Develop and engage in legal advocacy such as drafting rulemaking petitions, agency comments, letters, fact sheets, and drafting or analyzing proposed legislation, as well as participating in meetings with clients, coalition partners, and agency staff. Identify and support clients; work with experts to build cases and achieve litigation goals. Represent Earthjustice in meetings with clients, partners, co-counsel, opposing counsel, technical experts, and agency staff. Handle other legal work to support the goals of the Toxic Exposure & Health Program. Serve as spokesperson with print and other media upon appropriate training. Assist in the hiring and supervision of student law clerks. Qualifications Juris Doctorate required. Law school graduates admitted to, or eligible to apply for admission to, the Washington DC or New York bar. 1–3 years of post‑law school legal experience, with litigation experience preferred. Excellent research, analytical, writing, and communication skills. Strong work ethic, good judgment, initiative, and creativity. Ability to work constructively in a diverse, dynamic, and team‑oriented environment. Commitment to public interest work and passion for Earthjustice’s mission. Emotional intelligence and sensitivity to diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations. Willingness to travel as needed for case work, court appearances, and presentations. Compensation Based on experience and location: NewYork, NY salary range $114,800–$123,300; Washington, DC salary range $109,100–$117,100. Location & Work Setting This hybrid position is based in Washington, DC or NewYork, NY, requiring in‑person attendance at least two days per week.
