Director, Advanced Practice Provider
The Director, Advanced Practice Provider is responsible for both clinical and oversight and the strategic direction of organ recovery efforts. In addition to the responsibilities of an advanced practice provider (APP)including comprehensive donor management, including directing or performing advanced clinical procedures such as liver biopsies, bronchoscopies, and invasive line placements to ensure the successful recovery of organs for transplantation and researchthe lead APP assumes expanded administrative responsibilities to include scheduling oversight, budget and resource stewardship, onboarding and mentorship of new clinicians, and participation in recruiting and hiring. The incumbent will also support the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in aligning operations with organizational goals, both internal and external regulatory requirements, and will aid in representing STA on an internal, regional, and national scale.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Communication
- Provide medical consultation to donor families with clarity, compassion, and professionalism,
- Serve as a key liaison across physicians, APPs, nurses, hospital partners, and internal stakeholders to ensure coordinated care and operations.
- Represent the organization at local, regional, and national levels to advance clinical practice and organizational presence.
- Support education and protocol adherence across contracted services.
Time Management
- Oversee clinical scheduling, staffing models, and coverage to ensure operational readiness and continuity of care.
- Monitor team performance and workload distribution to optimize team effectiveness.
Attention to Detail
- Perform and oversee advanced procedures (e.g., bronchoscopy, invasive line placement, liver biopsies) and ensure competency validation for clinical staff.
- Ensure compliance with CMS, OPTN/UNOS, and other regulatory requirements.
Problem-Solving
- Support complex clinical scenarios including intraoperative organ declines and deviations from standard allocation protocols.
- Collaborate with Hospital Services and AOC to address operational barriers impacting donor management.
- Provide leadership support during high-acuity or complex donor cases.
Accountability
- Provide advanced clinical oversight for donor management, ensuring optimal organ function and maximizing transplantable outcomes.
- Provide oversight and clinical guidance to contracted partners (e.g., cardiac catheterization lab) to ensure quality, safety, and compliance.
Conflict Resolution
- Collaborate with external physicians and partners, align practices with organizational standards.
Coaching & Feedback
- Mentor, coach, and develop advanced practice clinicians and clinical staff to strengthen clinical judgement and technical expertise.
- Support onboarding, skill progression, and competency validation for new and existing staff.
- Partner with leadership to establish feedback loops and data-driven improvements in clinical outcomes.
Collaboration & Influence
- Partner with the Chief Medical Officer and clinical leadership to align recovery operations with organizational strategy and regulatory requirements.
- Guide donor candidacy decisions and support real-time clinical decision-making in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer and clinical teams.
- Act as proxy for the Chief Medical Officer when appropriate in clinical, operational, and policy discussions.
Performance Management
- Lead and participate in case reviews, quality assurance activities, and performance improvement initiatives.
Decision Making
- Serve in on-call rotation as a clinical and operational leader representing the Chief Medical Officer.
Process Improvement
- Develop, implement, and refine clinical policies, procedures, and protocols aligned with regulatory and best practice standards.
- Lead and contribute to process improvement initiatives that enhance clinical outcomes and operational efficiency.
Leadership Team & Culture
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and professional growth.
Strategic Thinking & Analytics
- Contribute to strategic projects and organizational initiatives that advance the mission.
- Identify and support research opportunities, innovation in donor management, and adoption of advanced technologies (e.g., ECMO, NRP).
Financial Acumen
- Support department budget planning and resource stewardship with a focus on efficiency and cost management.
Risk Management
- Partner with Learning & Development to design, implement, and maintain training programs, competency assessments, and continuing education initiatives.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the purpose of the role.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Master's degree in Nursing with an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner board certification or Physician Assistant (PA-C) licensure is required. Doctorate degree in Nursing is preferred. A combination of alternative education and experience may be considered in lieu of the formal education requirements.
- Minimum of 1 year of OPO experience is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a critical care role is required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a leadership role is preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.
- Strong working knowledge of organ procurement and transplantation processes and regulations, including federal and state regulations and industry standards regarding organ procurement is required.
- Current Driver's License is required and maintained with an acceptable driving record as defined by STA policy.
Compliance:
- This position is classified as OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Category I. Employees in this role routinely perform job duties that may involve direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required at all times.
- Employees will receive mandatory training on bloodborne pathogens, safe work practices, and proper PPE usage. Employees must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, accreditation requirements, and organizational policies.
- This role requires compliance with HIPAA and all confidentiality standards related to patient, donor, employee, and organizational information. Employees must safeguard all confidential information and disclose it only as permitted by law and organizational policy.
