Chaplain - Spiritual Care

At Houston Methodist, the Night Chaplain (9:30 pm to 6:30 am) position is responsible for providing spiritual care to meet the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of Houston Methodist patients and their family members. This position also supports employees, visitors and physicians, making visits with patients for initial assessments and follow‑up care, and assisting with spiritual needs across the campus. FLSA STATUS Exempt QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION Master’s degree in theology or related studies from an accredited institution or equivalency approved by recognized professional bodies. Four units of clinical pastoral education (CPE) from an accredited institution. EXPERIENCE Highly preferred professional chaplain experience. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Must have one of the following certifications within 3 years of hire: Board Certified Chaplain (BCCI, NAJC, NACC, NAVAC, APC, SCA), Advanced Practice Board Certified Chaplain (SCA), or Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner (CASC). SKILLS AND ABILITIES Endorsed by a recognized endorsing body. Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies verified through ongoing assessments. Proficient in spoken, read, and written English necessary for patient safety. Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers. Basic computer knowledge for documentation purposes. Ability to work independently, handle challenging interactions, and exercise sound judgment. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills throughout the healthcare team. Adapts to multiple priorities with minimal supervision while organizing workflow. Strong organization and attention to detail. Professional handling of confidential information. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Facilitate a supportive environment for patients, families, visitors, employees, and physicians. Assist leadership in planning and carrying out mission, vision, and values. Provide spiritual care support to employees. Collaborate with care team, communicating positively. Mentor CPE students and spiritual care volunteers; orient and precept new chaplains. Demonstrate healthy work relationships, resolve conflicts, and propose initiatives to improve employee engagement. SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provide spiritual care to patients and families across all faiths during hospitalization, especially pre‑operative, critically ill, and dying patients. Conduct spiritual assessments, respond to referrals and code activations, perform follow‑up care, and adjust plans when needed. Serve as liaison with community clergy and denominational groups, leveraging community resources. Act as initial point of contact for crisis intervention for all stakeholders. Recommend initiatives to meet or exceed patient satisfaction targets. QUALITY & SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Participate in interprofessional rounds, identify needs, take action, and report near misses. Accurately document visits and spiritual care in patient records. Consult physicians and leadership to assess quality and safety; recommend improvements. FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and practice responsible financial stewardship. GROWTH & INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Plan and lead department or hospital‑wide activities such as worship services, values integration, accreditation readiness, and bioethics. Participate in hospital committees and community activities; maintain a dynamic My Development Plan.
