Mount Vernon School District 320 Jefferson Elementary - Mount Vernon, Washington Starting Date: Jul 1, 2026 Position Summary Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, building administrator and/or the Head Custodian, participate in the work of keeping school buildings and facilities properly maintained, clean and orderly. Benefits Eligibility for SEBB medical, dental, vision, life insurance, AD&D, and LTD if anticipated to reach 630 hours in the school year. Eligibility for retirement based on 3.50 hrs/day or more for 5 or more consecutive months. Optional tax‑sheltered annuities: Omni 403(b) and Deferred Compensation Plan. Personal leave, vacation leave (260‑day employees only), and sick leave prorated based on FTE. Minimum Qualifications Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. School Custodian experience preferred. Current Washington State Driver’s License. Ability to obtain a valid CPR First Aid card. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clean floors including sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing and polishing; scrape and refinish floors as required; operate floor polishers, scrubbers and other power equipment. Vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets. Clean walls, windows, woodwork, metalwork and fixtures, including bowls, sinks, counters, shelves, drinking fountains, blackboards, erasers and waste receptacles. Clean furniture; move, arrange and adjust furniture as required. Assist in the ordering and distribution of janitorial supplies. Perform basic maintenance as necessary, including cleaning gutters and roof drains, replacing filters, painting, and minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry. Coordinate with Head Custodian when additional maintenance or repairs are required. Clean sidewalks, entryways, driveways, parking, and play areas; remove litter, leaves, and debris. Unlock and lock building and rooms; inspect for vandalism and report findings. Check lighting systems, clocks and bells; replace/adjust as needed. Regulate heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems as necessary. Remove snow and/or de‑ice walkways as necessary. Perform such other duties as may be assigned from time to time. Qualification Requirements Language Skills: Ability to read, write, and present in English. Interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and community; perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Condition of Employment Criminal background clearance. Professional experience verification. Physical Demands The job requires regular standing, walking, use of hands and fingers, talking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms; occasional sitting; frequent squatting, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds, occasionally up to 90 pounds. Must use hand strength to grasp tools and climb ladders; bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person. Requires close, color, peripheral, depth perception and vision adjustment. Work Environment The work environment includes indoor and outdoor settings, near or with moving mechanical equipment, occasional handling of toxic or caustic chemicals. Must meet severe time constraints; noise level usually moderate.
