Seeking candidates for Staff Engineer – Traffic and Development at the City of Brentwood, TN Brentwood Engineering Department Starting salary (Pending June 22 Commission Approval) is $88,769 - $97,656 depending on qualifications and experience. Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six‑month probationary period. Plus: Transportation Allowance up to $2,000/year to be distributed equally over 26 pay periods annually. The City of Brentwood seeks a self‑motivated, goal‑driven, and collaborative colleague to join its team as the Staff Engineer of Traffic and Development. As the Staff Engineer of Traffic and Development, you’ll provide technical support for development review and traffic engineering activities within the Engineering Department. This role offers a unique opportunity to support smart development, coordinate neighborhood traffic calming efforts, evaluate traffic safety concerns, and contribute to the continued safety and efficiency of Brentwood’s transportation infrastructure. Coordinates neighborhood traffic calming requests, including petition review, public meeting coordination, speed and volume data evaluation, documentation, and recommendations consistent with adopted City policy. Reviews development plans and related engineering documents, including site plans, subdivision plats, roadway plans, grading plans, drainage studies, permits, and development proposals, for compliance with City code and engineering standards. Performs limited review of stormwater and utility components of private development plans, including water and sewer plans, in coordination with Engineering and Water Services staff. Tracks development submittals, permit submissions, plan review comments, public petitions, and related review status information. Assists in calculation construction cost estimates for bonding purposes. Provides technical expertise in construction resolution and performs site inspections to coordinate effectively with designers and contractors. Coordinates with third‑party traffic consultants when outside expertise is required, assisting with contracts, review of deliverables, and stakeholder communication. Supports Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners agenda items related to development, traffic calming, and transportation safety matters. Assists with traffic safety evaluations, including stop sign requests, speed limit modifications, school zone concerns, and pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure improvements. Reviews traffic impact studies and assists with signal warrant reviews, multi‑way stop analyses, and other transportation safety evaluations. Coordinates with internal staff, external consultants, and Public Works on traffic operations, signage, pavement markings, signal timing, intersection safety improvements, and MUTCD compliance. Responds to developers, consultants, HOA/POA representatives, and members of the public regarding traffic operations, permitting, and development review matters. Supports updates to design standards, subdivision regulations, and transportation‑related policies as directed. The ideal candidate: Has experience with traffic calming evaluation, traffic study review, and development‑related traffic recommendations. Is self‑motivated and able to work with a high degree of independence. Is detail‑oriented in tracking multiple projects, maintaining accurate records, and managing permit and plan review processes. Demonstrates strong communication skills, especially when working with the public, developers, consultants, or across departments. Is committed to professional development, continuous learning, and is driven to obtain Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure. Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited four‑year college or university, or an equivalent engineering degree qualifying the candidate for Engineer‑in‑Training (E.I.T.) certification in the State of Tennessee, is required. Engineer‑in‑Training (E.I.T.) certification is preferred. If not currently certified, the candidate must obtain E.I.T. certification, or equivalent recognition by the State of Tennessee, within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment. Progress toward licensure as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) within four years is desirable. 1–3 years of engineering experience in municipal development review, transportation engineering, or related civil engineering practice is preferred. Working knowledge of traffic engineering principles, traffic calming methodologies, MUTCD standards, ITE guidelines, and basic hydrologic and hydraulic principles related to site development is required. Valid, unrestricted Driver’s License required, or able to obtain a Driver’s License within six months of the date of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position may be considered. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines and technical tools including a computer, printer, calculator, telephone, drafting and review software, measuring devices, and related equipment. Must be able to conduct field inspections of construction sites and stormwater infrastructure, which may require walking over uneven terrain, climbing moderate slopes, entering construction areas, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Must be able to exert up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally and/or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are consistent with a combination of sedentary office work and light field inspection activities.DATA CONCEPTION:
