Road Maintenance Worker I & Eligibility Register

Position Summary Road Maintenance Worker I – entry level position in the Snohomish County Public Works Department. The role supports road maintenance and repair operations across the county, providing essential services to the community. Responsibilities Safely perform all traffic control duties, including setting up barricades, traffic cones, and signs and flagging traffic for stationary and moving work zones. Load and unload equipment, materials, and supplies as directed. Clean and clear culverts, drainage ditches, and other drainage structures; maintain vegetation using hand and power tools. Remove brush and debris with hand and power tools such as weed eaters, chainsaws, and chippers; assist in clean‑up of illegal dump sites. Install raised pavement markers, thermoplastic markings, and other traffic channelization devices. Perform concrete and asphalt pavement installation, repair, patching, and cleaning using jackhammers and other tools; may assist with sub‑grade preparation and concrete installations. Help with the construction of concrete catch basins, retaining walls, walkways, and other structures; build concrete forms, place reinforcing steel, mix and pour concrete, and finish surfaces. Conduct routine preventive maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment and tools; complete service requests as needed. Submit neat and complete written and electronic records, including timesheets and maintenance reports. Operate CDL‑equipped trucks as a driver or equipment operator when required, including emergency response duties. Drive pickup trucks or light‑duty diesel trucks up to 26,000 GVW. Other Duties Use a laptop computer, mobile data collector, or digital camera to record work progress. Perform additional related duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent training or experience. Valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 3 months of hire, with tanker endorsement. Valid Washington State Driver’s License and a clean driving record. State of Washington Traffic Flagging Card within 3 weeks of hire. First Aid Card within 90 days of hire. Successful completion of a job‑related exam and reference checks. Ability to pass random drug and alcohol testing. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather, lift up to 50 pounds, and work occasional nights, weekends, or holidays. Regular schedule Monday‑Friday 7:30 am–4:00 pm; from mid‑February through mid‑November typically Monday‑Thursday 6:30 am–5:00 pm.
