Job Title
The mission and purpose of this position are to compassionately deliver high-quality service, as well as basic and advanced patient care in a professional, caring manner.
This job has been designated as a Safety Sensitive Position by HCESD11. Public safety, as well as the safety of HCESD11 employees, requires that the employee in this position be able to always perform all essential functions at the highest levels. Therefore, this position is subject to frequent drug testing and requires reporting of all employee use of High-Risk Medications identified by HCESD11 and certification from the employee's physician that such medications can be safely used while working. Because HCESD11's ability to deliver emergency medical response depends on having a workforce that can be reliably scheduled, this job also requires regular and reliable attendance. This is a high-stress job that requires focus, engagement, and high performance in traumatic, physically demanding, emotionally charged, and life-threatening situations. The position involves exposure to serious and graphic injury to adults and children, including death and dismemberment. A high level of physical, mental, and emotional health is an essential requirement.
Essential Skills
- Adheres to all agency policies and procedures.
- Maintaining appropriate mental focus and emotional stability to perform safety sensitive functions in high stress, traumatic, physically demanding, emotionally charged situations.
- Reporting on time and regularly working scheduled shifts to not compromise the delivery of emergency medical care.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays. (This may include being called in for minimum staffing, shift coverage, weather events, and/or community and natural disasters)
- Performing the Physical Requirements listed below.
- Adherence to STARCARE values in all interactions.
- Take an active role to ensure gossip and hearsay are not perpetuated.
- Professionally represent HCESD11 at all times.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Competently render both non-emergency and emergency pre-hospital care.
- Assess each call situation to determine best course of action and appropriate protocol.
- Develop and utilize triage skills to provide optimal efficiency during calls.
- Performs responsibly and acts as team leader during management of a scene.
- Consider patient status and patient requests when determining transportation destinations.
- Utilize medical equipment, including cardiac monitor, oxygen and suction devices, CPR and other procedures and medications as required to provide basic medical care consistent with medical protocols.
- Attend and participate in all required continuing education/meetings of HCESD11 and/or the Medical Directors Office.
- Maintain ALL certifications as required by the Medical Director and HCESD11.
- Comply with HCESD11 and Department of State Health Services requirements for continuing education and licensure.
- Communicate information through the proper "chain of command", to management and other employees of HCESD11.
- Comply with local, state, and regional emergency medical service operations, regulations, and laws.
- Accurately and completely document the required information on all required documentation required by HCESD11, the Department of State Health Services and the Office of the Medical Director. Examples include logistics forms, employee injury reports, accident reports, incident reports, etc.
- Communicate with Controllers to receive and understand call data provided as well as requesting additional resources or other needs in the field.
- Monitor and maintain the general condition of HCESD11 property, including but not limited to, vehicles, equipment, buildings, and surrounding areas to provide efficient and appropriate patient care, as well as to maintain the image of HCESD11.
- Participate in community programs to establish strong community relations to include community programs sponsored by the police, fire departments and other external customers of HCESD11.
- Effectively function in the Dynamic Resources Management System and understand the system.
- Safely operating and maintaining an emergency vehicle and equipment and tools relevant to position.
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and loved ones.
- Maintain a clean appearance and demonstrate courteous, professional, and ethical behavior.
- Work cooperatively with other members of the EMS Health Care System.
- Ensure confidentiality of medical and all other discretionary information.
- Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Environment:
- Occasionally: Extreme heat and cold, wet and/or humid conditions, vibration, pressurized equipment, burning materials, moving objects, high places, fumes/odors/mists, gases, toxic conditions
- Frequently: Extended days, inside, outside, temperature changes, mechanical & electrical equipment, confined areas, noise, dirt/dust, other hazardous conditions, human excrement, blood, urine, mucous, tissue
- Constantly: Work with and around others, face to face and verbal contact with others, shift work
Requirements
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 125 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- At least 18 years of age
- At least two years' experience as a lead paramedic in a progressive 911 system.
- Completion of a qualified Paramedic program and acceptance for certification in the State of Texas and maintaining certification or licensure.
- Maintain current Valid Texas Driver's License
- Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR card
- NIMS 100,200,700,800
- Effective communication both oral and written.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Ability to read a map and have basic knowledge of State, County, and other public roadways.
- Knowledge of Texas Administrative Code 157
- Knowledge of other standards, rules, regulations, and policies related to EMS.
- Any other requirements as determined by the Office of the Medical Director
- May not have been excluded by the OIG to participate in federally funded healthcare programs.
Preferred Requirements
- Previous experience in a 911 EMS system
- One year of full-time EMS experience
