Certified Surgical TechnologistSurgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. They ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique. They combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools and technologies to assist in performing invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. They understand the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. They maintain quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly vigilant for maintenance of the sterile field.Essential functions include preparing and anticipating instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure; setting up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications needed for the procedure; performing instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator; participating in procedure final verification and during the briefing process; assisting with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field; anticipating the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies; maintaining the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure; preparing and passing off specimens as appropriate; cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization, when assigned; assisting other team members with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turnovers; participating in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care; assisting in developing a proper learning environment in relation to orientation and education of personnel and students; and performing other duties as assigned.Qualifications include a high school diploma, graduate of an accredited surgical technology program preferred, prior training required by a hospital, surgical technology, or military program that meets the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the role, membership to the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) preferred, one year of relevant experience preferred for all roles, certification as a surgical technologist (CST) preferred, and basic life support instructor (BLS INSTR) preferred.Physical demands include seldom up to 50 lbs. for pallet to waist, occasionally up to 25 lbs. for pushing force, frequently standing and walking, and occasionally reaching above shoulder and at shoulder or below.
