Professional Student Nurse Extern 1 Nursing PSNE

The PSNE-1 Year-Round program application process will open September 29 2026 and will close on October 5 2026 at 5 p.m. CST.

Applicants may apply for only one PSNE position either the PSNE-1 or PSNE-2 job posting. Applicants are not permitted to apply for both positions.

To qualify for the Year-Round PSNE-1 program students must:

• Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited ADN or BSN school of professional nursing
• Have completed at least one nursing clinical rotation by beginning of program
• Verify academic standing by submission of unofficial school transcript
• Have a desire to work with the oncology patient population
• Be able to work a minimum of 24 hours every month (students may work a maximum of 64 hours every month)
• Be able to attend alldays of mandatory institutional and nursing PSNE orientation. No exceptions will be made for this requirement . Mandatory orientation will be held December 14-18 2026 from 8:00 am to 4:30pm.(Monday-Friday)

Clinical experience

The program length is 1 to 3 semesters. Selected applicants will complete an orientation overseen by Nursing Workforce Planning and Development and the Nursing Education team. Each student will be assigned to work under the direct supervision of Patient Care Technician (PCT) preceptors in one of our many clinical inpatient specialty areas.

Compensation

This is a temporary position. Students are paid a competitive hourly salary and work a minimum of 24 hours every month (students may work a maximum of 64 hours every month). This position is not eligible for benefits.

SUMMARY
Function: Performs patient care activities and services necessary in maintaining activities of daily living of patients.
Scope: Impacts patient care activities that do not require the attention of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Adheres to the standards of nursing care and the policies and procedures of the hospital. Performs basic procedures to include vital signs intake and output and weights. Collects data and provides information to the patient Care Technician and/or registered nurse. Reports all changes in vital signs and abnormal values of any kind to the registered nurse. Documents all interventions and measurements in the patients medical record. Maintains the work environment as assigned. Provides for patients safety. Utilizes available resources. Identifies self-development needs and seeks assistance in meeting those needs. Demonstrates behavior that reflects cooperation commitment adjustment reliability and initiative.

EDUCATION

• Required: High school diploma or equivalent and currently enrolled full-time in an accredited nursing program. and
• Preferred: Completed a minimum of one clinical semester/quarter prior to employment start date.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: There are two tracks for the Professional Student Nurse Extern. Track 1 will work with a Patient Care Technician and requires completion of one clinical semester/quarter. Track 2 will work with a clinical nurse and requires completion of two clinical semesters/quarters and enrollment in an accredited BSN program.
