Bacteriologist I (2600048S) Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DFG) is seeking a Bacteriologist I for the Shellfish Program in the New Bedford Laboratory. Responsibilities include performing biological, microbiological, and chemical analyses on water, wastewater, and shellfish samples to assess impacts of combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges on Shellfish Growing Areas in Buzzards Bay. The position supports the daily operation of the New Bedford Shellfish Lab, ensuring compliance with National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) regulations. Detailed Responsibilities Performs analysis of shellfish samples, water samples, wastewater samples, and related quality controls using Standard Methods and approved SOPs found in the laboratory’s QA manual. Prepares laboratory materials such as culture media, buffers, bacteriological cultures, and chemical reagents. Assists the Shellfish Program with shellfish, water, and wastewater sample collections as needed. Maintains laboratory equipment and performs periodic equipment calibrations and adjustments. Performs routine tasks associated with a microbiology laboratory such as washing dishes and glassware, operating an autoclave, and general laboratory upkeep. Ensures bacteriological, chemical, and physical sampling schedules, testing methods, and frequencies conform to laboratory SOPs, Standard Methods, NSSP, and federal and state regulations as required. Successfully performs annual laboratory proficiency testing. Participates in various studies relating to the laboratory and the NSSP. Available for regular weekend work as needed to assist in these tasks. Maintains collaborative and harmonious working relationships with colleagues, demonstrating professionalism in words and actions. Assists other Marine Fisheries projects conducting monitoring and research as time allows. Qualifications at Hire Knowledge of bacteriological testing procedures, sterile technique, and QA/QC practices. Understanding of the operation of laboratory equipment (autoclaves, pH meters, pipettes, etc.). Knowledge of shellfish biology. Ability to keep clear, concise, and accurate records. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible hours and days, including weekends, depending on tide schedule, significant rain events, and other contingencies. Ability to work as part of a team and as well as independently. Qualifications Acquired on the Job Knowledge of the testing requirements of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Ability to perform duties according to laboratory SOPs. Ability to perform laboratory tasks and sample analyses independently. Special Requirements Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or equivalent is required. Minimum entrance requirements: Applicants must have at least two years of full‑time, or equivalent part‑time, professional or paraprofessional experience in bacteriology, biology, or biochemistry work. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in bacteriology, biology, chemistry, or biochemistry may substitute for the required experience.
