TITLE:
- Speech-Language Pathologist
- Holds an active, valid license in speech-language pathology (full or school only) issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech -Language Pathology (BASLP)
- Principal/Director of Special Education
- To help reduce or eliminate speech and language impairments that interfere with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program
- Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement
- Provide a therapeutic program to meet the individual needs of speech, language and hearing-impaired children
- Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments
- Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language fluency impairments
- Provide screening to identify speech handicapped children at regular intervals and at specified levels
- Assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate
- Provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities
- Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate
- Provide in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement
- Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services
- Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services
- Compile case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate
- Assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Positions that are itinerant will involve frequent traveling between schools and will also involve periodic transporting of audiometers
- 10-month contract; Salary based upon teacher's scale
- Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
