JOB SUMMARY
The Manager, Laboratory Services provides operational, technical, quality, and people leadership for Ellenville Regional Hospital’s clinical laboratory. The Manager directs daily technical and non-technical activities; ensures timely, accurate, and reliable testing; maintains compliance with applicable federal and New York State requirements and accreditation standards; and promotes a culture of safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and responsive patient service. The Manager remains technically proficient and performs testing or other bench responsibilities when operationally necessary.
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Directs the daily technical and non-technical operations of the Laboratory, including workflow, staffing, scheduling, testing activities, and service delivery.
- Ensures laboratory testing is performed accurately, completely, and within established timeframes and that results are reviewed, verified, and released in accordance with approved procedures.
- Develops and adjusts staff schedules to provide appropriate coverage, meet workstation requirements, manage overtime, and maintain continuity of laboratory services.
- Supervises, trains, coaches, mentors, and evaluates technical and non-technical staff. Participates in recruitment, selection, orientation, competency assessment, staff development, performance management, and corrective action.
- Serves as the Laboratory Quality Systems Manager, or fulfills delegated quality-system responsibilities, and oversees quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, analytical surveillance, competency documentation, and performance improvement activities.
- Ensures compliance with CLIA, New York State Department of Health requirements, applicable accreditation standards, hospital policies, infection prevention and safety requirements, and ERH’s Code of Conduct.
- Investigates deviations, nonconforming testing events, complaints, and operational concerns. Develops, documents, implements, and monitors corrective and preventive actions for effectiveness.
- Reviews required quality and safety records, including temperature logs, preventive maintenance documentation, quality control records, disinfection schedules, eyewash checks, lot-to-lot verification, and other department forms.
- Develops, reviews, implements, and maintains laboratory policies, procedures, test methods, and work instructions. Communicates changes and ensures staff understanding and compliance.
- Leads or supports the validation, verification, installation, implementation, and ongoing performance monitoring of instrumentation, test systems, information systems, and methods.
- Ensures preventive maintenance is completed and documented, coordinates equipment repairs, and follows through until equipment is safely returned to service.
- Monitors workload, productivity, turnaround times, quality measures, service levels, and operational performance. Identifies trends and leads measurable process-improvement initiatives.
- Coordinates with the Laboratory Director, Medical Director, hospital leadership, nursing, providers, vendors, and other departments to resolve patient-care, technical, and operational concerns.
- Conducts regular department meetings and maintains effective communication with staff regarding procedures, priorities, quality findings, organizational changes, and performance expectations.
- Performs laboratory testing, specimen review, result verification, instrument troubleshooting, and other technical duties within the scope of licensure and demonstrated competency when operationally necessary.
- Manages departmental resources in a cost-effective manner and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency without compromising quality, safety, or service.
- Maintains current technical and regulatory knowledge through continuing education and professional development and ensures required education and training are shared with staff.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality improvement and patient safety activities and supports regulatory surveys, inspections, and accreditation readiness.
- Maintains positive, professional, and respectful interactions with patients, visitors, medical providers, employees, and other stakeholders in accordance with ERH Standards of Behavior.

Salary: $100,000 – $135,000 annually.

EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory, including at least two years of formal supervisory or leadership experience.
- Hospital laboratory leadership experience across multiple testing disciplines is preferred.
- Experience with regulatory surveys, quality improvement, method validation or verification, and laboratory technology implementation is preferred.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution, or another education pathway that satisfies applicable regulatory requirements.
CERTIFICATIONS/SKILLS
- Current New York State license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, maintained in good standing.
- Must meet all applicable federal and New York State qualifications for the laboratory supervisory responsibilities assigned to the position.
- ASCP or other nationally recognized certification appropriate to the discipline is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of laboratory operations, quality systems, instrumentation, test methods, CLIA, and New York State requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, develop, and evaluate technical and non-technical employees.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands, solve problems, and make sound decisions under pressure with minimal supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, patients, medical providers, leaders, vendors, and the general public.
- Must possess effective written and verbal communication skills and a high level of attention to detail.
- Proficiency with laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to be flexible, organized, and effective in a changing healthcare environment.
- Ability to perform the physical and cognitive requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
