Western Cascade Truck Inc. is looking for an experienced 2nd Shift Diesel Mechanic to support our fleet maintenance operation servicing CalPortland's heavy-duty truck fleet .

This position is ideal for a mechanic who enjoys working on Class 8 trucks, troubleshooting real problems, and having the opportunity to perform more than basic preventive maintenance.

Our technicians work on equipment that has to perform every day. We are looking for someone who takes pride in diagnosing problems correctly, performing quality repairs, and getting trucks safely back into service.

Work Schedule

Monday–Friday
1:00 PM–9:00 PM

This position provides dedicated second-shift coverage for fleet maintenance and repair operations.

Primary Responsibilities

The Diesel Mechanic will perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy-duty commercial trucks, with a primary focus on ready-mix/concrete mixer trucks.

Responsibilities may include:

• Diagnose and repair heavy-duty diesel trucks
• Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled services
• Diagnose check-engine lights and fault codes
• Perform forced regenerations and troubleshoot aftertreatment systems
• Diagnose and repair air brake systems
• Inspect and repair suspension and steering components
• Diagnose electrical and charging-system problems
• Troubleshoot wiring, lighting, switches, sensors, and electrical components
• Repair hydraulic systems and components
• Diagnose PTO and driveline problems
• Service transmissions, differentials, and driveline components
• Diagnose engine performance concerns
• Repair coolant, fuel, air, and exhaust systems
• Replace worn or damaged components
• Perform DOT-related inspections and repairs as assigned
• Identify additional repairs needed while equipment is in the shop
• Document all work performed on the appropriate Repair Order
• Maintain accurate technician work stories explaining repairs, diagnostics, and problems encountered
• Keep the work area, tools, and equipment clean and organized
• Follow Western Cascade and CalPortland safety requirements

Mixer Truck Experience

Experience with ready-mix/concrete mixer trucks is highly desirable , but we will consider experienced heavy-duty diesel mechanics from other Class 8 fleet environments.

Relevant experience may include:

• Concrete mixer trucks
• Dump trucks
• Refuse trucks
• Vocational trucks
• Tractor-trailers
• Construction equipment
• Heavy-duty fleet maintenance

Experience working with hydraulic systems, PTO-driven equipment, and vocational trucks is especially valuable.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate has strong mechanical ability and can work independently without needing constant supervision.

We are looking for someone who:

• Has professional heavy-duty diesel repair experience
• Understands Class 8 truck systems
• Can diagnose problems instead of simply replacing parts
• Is comfortable using diagnostic equipment and scan tools
• Understands electrical troubleshooting
• Has experience with air brake systems
• Has experience with hydraulic systems
• Can safely use shop equipment and tools
• Can read and understand repair information and service procedures
• Can accurately document repairs
• Communicates effectively with supervisors and other technicians
• Takes pride in performing repairs correctly
• Understands the importance of equipment uptime
• Is dependable and reports to work consistently and on time

Documentation Is Part of the Job

Western Cascade places a strong emphasis on accurate repair documentation.

Technicians are expected to properly clock into the assigned Repair Order and condition and provide a clear technician story explaining:

What was performed.
How the work was performed.
What problems, delays, or additional issues were encountered.

Good documentation allows our team to understand equipment problems, accurately track labor, improve our repair processes, and provide our customers with clear information regarding the work performed.

Safety

Safety is a condition of employment.

Technicians are expected to follow established procedures regarding:

• Lockout/tagout
• Vehicle lifting and support
• Heavy equipment operation
• PPE
• Welding and hot work
• Hydraulic systems
• Electrical systems
• Air brake systems
• Shop equipment
• Hazardous materials
• General fleet/shop safety

Unsafe shortcuts are not considered acceptable methods of completing a repair.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have:

• 3+ years of heavy-duty diesel mechanic experience
• Class 7/Class 8 truck experience
• Fleet maintenance experience
• Hydraulic troubleshooting experience
• Electrical diagnostic experience
• Air brake experience
• Diesel aftertreatment/DPF/DEF diagnostic experience
• PTO and driveline experience
• Experience with vocational trucks or concrete mixers
• ASE certifications are a plus but are not required

Equivalent combinations of training and hands-on experience will be considered.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

• Work underneath and around heavy-duty trucks
• Frequently stand, bend, kneel, climb, and reach
• Safely lift and handle heavy truck components with appropriate equipment
• Use hand tools, pneumatic tools, and power tools
• Work in an active fleet maintenance environment
