Senior Product Owner

Position Summary An exciting career awaits you at MPC. The Refining Operations Excellence Senior Product Owner works closely with business analysts, developers, product managers, operations, process, and personal safety subject matter experts and other stakeholders to drive best‑in‑class operations and safety programs at MPC’s refining locations. This role provides support for a broad portfolio of industry standard personal & process safety applications while driving MPC Operations’ digital enablement strategy through the introduction of modern AI and data analytic capabilities. It manages the lifecycle of internally developed and commercial software, including tooling, definition, design, planning, development, prototyping and testing, and acts as a liaison between IT and business leaders to develop a product roadmap. The role applies design thinking techniques (e.g. user stories, prototyping) to define product features, maintains the Operations Excellence team’s backlog, directs work to ensure a robust, sustainable and supported portfolio of applications across the enterprise, and works with internal and external partners to select and customize technology products and/or services. Key Responsibilities Build customer and internal‑facing products with superior user experience across multiple verticals, accountable for an established or moderate complexity product. Ensure alignment between teams to prioritize product roadmaps, plan releases, and align them with business objectives. Collaborate with Agile teams, stakeholders, and business representatives to address and resolve issues during product development. Work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams, including R&D, UX, and business and operations teams, to align product strategies, gather insights, and plan releases. Identify product‑related issues, make decisions, and continuously conduct trade‑off analyses to keep development on track toward deliverable commitments. Prioritize the short‑term feature backlog and releases, as well as the long‑term product roadmap for products. Conduct customer research, product discovery and synthesize market factors into a cohesive product strategy. Collaborate with customers to understand challenges and opportunities. Collect quantitative data and take a data‑driven approach to evaluate the viability of product initiatives. Write epics and stories to support completion of initiatives; ensure stories clearly communicate the customer and stakeholder needs to meet key business objectives and strategies for the product; promote Agile approaches to product development across teams/areas. Collaborate with the Operations Excellence Product Manager to develop a product roadmap and support strategy. Leverage influence and domain expertise to drive consistent product ownership across sites and commitment from site leadership and key stakeholders. Lead development of best practices and ensure compliance with company standards in product execution. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, related field or equivalent work experience. Product Owner certification preferred. 5+ years of relevant product owner experience required. Product Development – innovate, enhance, or improve existing product or develop entirely new product for end‑users. Product Lifecycle Management – manage product through development, growth, maturity and decline stages. User Experience (UX) – design overall experience that is easy or pleasing to use.
