Attorney IV Position

The mission of the Office of Legal Affairs is to offer quality legal advice to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's (CDCR's) leadership and staff to help ensure that CDCR's operations are conducted effectively and consistent with legal requirements. Our attorneys anticipate legal issues and offer practical solutions, appropriately resolve legal disputes, and vigorously advocate to advancing CDCR's mission. As in-house counsel, Attorneys work in coordination with many of CDCR's divisions and the Office of the Attorney General on a wide range of sensitive and complex issues requiring systemic reform. For these positions, issues may include mass torts, disability accommodations (both physical and developmental as well as employee reasonable accommodation requests); inmate health care (both medical and mental health); due process, and conditions of confinement that include transgender housing, gang management and restricted housing reform.

The successful candidate thrives in a fast paced environment with endless opportunities to become a subject matter expert, travel within California, and work in both a collaborative team environment and independently. The successful candidate will be expected to: provide legal advice primarily in the fields of Constitutional law and/or the Americans with Disabilities Act; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; lead meetings with multiple stakeholders; represent CDCR's interest during meet and confers, settlement negotiations, or institution tours; present topics to a wide range of stakeholders; and, perform multiple tasks that require stringent adherence to deadlines.

Individuals with an active State Bar License who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position.

CDCR Headquarters has implemented a new automated system to streamline the hiring process. The Human Resources Technology System (HRTS) is an intuitive, user-friendly system that provides applicant access to real-time updates throughout the hiring process.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented in response to the status of the State budget. PLP 2025 requires that each full-time employee receive a 4.62% reduction in pay in exchange for eight (8) hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through October 31, 2026.
