FACILITIES MAINTENANCE CUSTODIAN

Description The Facilities Maintenance Custodian performs general labor, cleaning, and inspections required for the maintenance and upkeep of NCTD facilities. This is a bargained position represented by the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation workers (SMART) Union. In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, effective July 1, 2026, the salary for this position is $21.31 per hour. Distinguishing Characteristics Able to perform routine custodial maintenance, cleaning, and grounds keeping in the Maintenance of Facilities Department, to include having the skill and ability to operate the tools and equipment associated with these functions. May work independently or as a part of a team in assigned work areas. Supervision Received and Exercised The Facilities Maintenance Custodian works under the immediate supervision of the COASTER/SPRINTER Managers and/or Shift Supervisors. They have no direct supervisory responsibility. The position is expected to participate in sharing expert knowledge and serve as a vital member of various project teams that may be instituted. Working Conditions This position is required to work in all types of settings, including outdoors. The classification also works with various machinery and chemicals. Individuals must be able to work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries, wear protective equipment including hearing protection, safety-toe boots, safety glasses and other Personal Protective Equipment items as assigned by NCTD. Business travel may be required periodically between District sites, governmental agencies, consultants’ facilities, and other locations as required. Essential Functions Performs cleaning activities to buildings, sites, equipment, and assists Facilities Maintenance Technicians. Performs cleaning duties in accordance with the District Cleaning Plan and cleaning industry standards for each facility to include offices, industrial buildings, buses, trains, coaches, and public transit centers/stations, including spill cleanup, biohazard cleaning, debris removal, sweeping and scrubbing concrete and asphalt, floor care, pressure washing, window cleaning, etc. Moves and/or arranges furniture and equipment. Loads and unloads supplies onto or from trucks. Performs touch up and minor painting, removes graffiti. Performs non-technical inspections on District buildings and sites. Organizes and maintains supplies and assists with proper care and storage of tools and equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Education/Experience High School diploma or GED required. Technical school or apprenticeship program in related field is a plus. One (1) year prior facility custodial experience preferred. Certificates/Licenses Possess and maintain a California driver’s license, Class C, with less than 6 points in the prior 36‑month period and no DUI’s in the prior 7‑year period. Maintain compliance with the District’s policy regarding Conflict of Interest and Ethics. Must be able to obtain and maintain annual access to Marine Corp Base Camp Pendleton. Must be able to become RWP Qualified on NCTD owned railroad properties. General Requirements Ability to safely use a wide variety of equipment and machinery common to custodial services such as stripping/buffing machines, vacuums, steam pressure washers, wet/dry shop vacuums, carpet extractors, cleaning machines, raiding flooring cleaning machines, squeegees, brushes, etc. Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and understand their interactions, danger signs and disposal methods. Knowledge of proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining a variety of floor surfaces including tile, carpeted, sealed concrete and laminate floors. Ability to use proper PPE for hazards, including for cleaning areas with biohazards. Ability to pass forklift driver training program. Ability to drive and maneuver a trailer. Ability to read and understand department memorandums, equipment user manuals, and signs in the work environment and respond accordingly. Aptitude to respond to written and oral instructions in English and to legibly complete forms or logs using English sentences or phrases. Ability to work effectively with others. Physical Requirements The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must possess the ability to use the phone, radio, tablet, and computer; have manual dexterity to complete clerical functions and work with office equipment. Lift equipment or objects up to 50 pounds frequently. The employee must be able to hear, see, and communicate verbally to exchange information. The employee must be able to physically travel between District locations and other destinations, work in evenings when required, work in hazardous conditions, and negotiate a variety of different and irregular terrain typical along a railway right-of-way. The employee may be subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases and chemicals. The employee must be able to walk, climb, balance, bend, carry, push, reach, sit, and stand and maintain balance in and around wet floors, roof tops, and other difficult work locations. Machines / Tools / Equipment Operate a motor vehicle (sedan, pickup truck, and 1½‑ton stake truck), scissor lift, articulated boom lift, and forklift safely. Safely use and operate hand, power tools, and maintenance equipment. Utilize motorized cleaning equipment and tools including buffers, sweepers, blowers, pressure washers, scrubbers, and vacuum. Ability to operate a personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite programs. Ability to operate standard office equipment, including fax, scanner, copier, and telephone.
