Job Summary:

The Cardiology Tech in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory performs tasks that provide technical support during invasive cardiovascular procedures while also providing basic patient care to all types of patients under the direction and supervision of the professional nurse. Cardiology Tech assists in maintaining order and cleanliness of the department.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (Percent of Time)

Essential Functions: The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:

1. General Patient Care: Performs general patient care as it relates to the patient's physical needs under the direction of the RN. 25%
2. Technical Support: Performs technical support during catheterization procedure. Circulates in the procedure rooms, scrub assist during procedure. Initiates appropriate action in regard to supplies and equipment. 25%
3. Performs catheter and sheath removal after invasive procedures. 10%
4. Assists Operations Coordinator as needed on inventory/supply maintenance. 5%
5. Communication: Communicates effectively on behalf of patients and/or unit concerns to the appropriate people. 5%
6. Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies. 5%
7. Service Standards: Provides service excellence to the customers of Saint Louis University Hospital by delivering timely, high quality care in a courteous and respectful manner. 5%
8. Personal Accountability: Demonstrates accountability for own job performance. 5%
9. Performance improvement (PI): Incorporates performance improvement into one's professional practice. 10%
10. Provides age-appropriate care to: <1%

The following job accountabilities may be assigned:

• Telephone communication.
• Routine patient care activities (i.e. bathing, bed changes, feeding patient).
• Specific data collection activities.

Job Specifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: High school graduate. Radiology Technologist registered preferred, or eligible. or CCI credential for Cath lab.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Previous Cath Lab experience

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS: BLS, ALS preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases and radiation.
• Requires wearing of protective apparel such as lead aprons, eye protection, sterile and non-sterile medical gloves and masks.
• Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.
• Exposed to unpleasant element (accident, injuries, illness).
• Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
• May perform emergency care.
• Subject to irregular hours.
• Pressure due to multiple competing demands.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking.
• Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients.
• Considerable reach, stooping, bending, kneeling, and/or crouching.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
