Design Phase Manager - Data Center Preconstruction

Summary Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Design Phase Manager with the ability to interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever‑changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive, and efficient while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The Design Phase Manager will ensure the owner’s vision is translated into design solutions and construction parameters through leadership of the design process and team members. They may work on two projects simultaneously or one larger project. Responsibilities Overall project leadership during the design phase as it relates to customer experience, financial performance, schedule, estimating, design, and planning to ensure a smooth transition to construction operations. Lead the project team in achieving scope and budget alignment, schedule alignment, an integrated team experience, construction readiness, and excellent financial performance. Establish and manage project budget and scope expectations, maintain budget trending logs and associated communications. Create and supervise project schedules and key achievements, holding team members accountable for reaching set achievements. Ensure regulatory approvals and permits are obtained. Ensure proper alignment of design documents and project execution plan. Responsible for bid packages and contract manuals. Identify and resolve technical design and specification concerns. Develop project margin plan. Act as primary point of contact with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners during the design phase and lead the overall project team. Monitor and measure against project success factors for customers, design partners, and Mortenson team. Foster an integrated team experience through communication and collaboration. Manage, mentor, and guide design phase team members to ensure clear direction and career growth. Effectively work and build relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels. Lead team members by example, offer effective coaching and feedback, and effectively manage performance. All other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Construction Management, Estimating, Architectural Engineering, or equivalent field. Minimum of eight (8) years relevant experience (six years for Design Phase Manager I). Strong teamwork orientation, initiative, communication, problem‑solving, and leadership skills. Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks. Basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices. Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, project, and pertinent web applications. Positive professional attitude and strong customer service skills. Ability to interpret and communicate company policies. Active listening skills and effective communication, including openness to diverse input and feedback. Ability to travel up to 100 %. Design Phase Manager I Salary & Compensation Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, or Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, Estimating, or equivalent field. Minimum of six years relevant experience. Base pay range: $113,500 – $170,300. (Actual range is higher for specific office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%; Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%; Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). Design Phase Manager II Salary & Compensation Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Construction Management, Estimating, or equivalent field. Minimum of eight years relevant experience. Base pay range: $132,100 – $198,200. (Actual range is higher for specific office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%; Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%; Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
