Current recruitment will be used to fill vacancies in the Water Reclamation Plant Assignment for the Water Resources Plant Maintenance Specialist I and II levels. Employees may progress through the full salary range based on performance and annual budget approval. Applications will first be reviewed on Monday, April 6, 2026 and thereafter weekly as needed. Water Resources Plant Maintenance Specialist I ($55,831.75 – $76,472.85 annually) The Specialist I is a one‑year trainee assignment functioning as a learner while accompanying a Specialist II or III. Incumbents perform entry‑level maintenance on the City of Mesa water reclamation or water treatment plants, learning on the job while assisting a lead. Install, maintain, and repair equipment and facilities: bar screens, compactors, degritters, mixers, pumps, compressors, pipes, blowers, odor control devices, centrifuges, ultraviolet (UV) equipment, chemical metering pumps, sludge hoppers, conveyor systems, boilers, biogas systems, waste‑gas flares, valves, gear boxes, and tanks. Learn basics of plant operations, including primary treatment, secondary treatment, activated sludge processes, filtration, disinfection, sludge dewatering, and digestion. Observe ongoing work, attend meetings, and participate in routine maintenance activities. Work in varied weather and exposure to ferrous chloride, raw sewage, toxic chemicals, high‑voltage lines, and confined spaces. May be subject to emergency call‑outs, on‑call standby, and overtime. Must meet criteria‑based promotion requirements and complete the one‑year training to progress to Specialist II within the time frame. Forklift operator certification within six months of hire. Valid Class D Arizona driver’s license by hire. Respirator qualification via medical evaluation per CFR 1910.134 by hire and maintain certification. 40‑hour HazWoper certification and annual eight‑hour refresher. Pre‑employment and random alcohol, drug, and controlled‑substance testing. Preferred: Grade I (or higher) Water Treatment System Operator or Wastewater Treatment System Operator certification from ADEQ or equivalent; minimum six months of successful performance in the City of Mesa Water Resources Department Intern program; familiarity with City of Mesa treatment facilities. Water Resources Plant Maintenance Specialist II ($64,664.91 – $88,572.85 annually) The Specialist II performs journey‑level maintenance on water treatment or reclamation equipment, working under the supervision of a Specialist III and the Plant Supervisor. Install, maintain, and repair bar screens, compactors, degritters, mixers, blowers, odor control devices, centrifuges, conveyor systems, UV equipment, chemical metering pumps, filtration equipment, sludge hoppers, boilers, biogas systems, and waste gas flares. Perform operational duties: analyze data trends, monitor equipment, optimize plant processes, sample and record process data. Supervised by Specialist III; no lead responsibilities. Exposure to weather, chlorine gas, fluoride, ferrous chloride, raw sewage, toxic chemicals, bleach, caustic, rotating equipment, biogas, noise, low oxygen, explosive environments, high‑voltage lines, and equipment. Emergency call‑out, overtime, and scheduled standby required. Promotion to Specialist II upon meeting required coursework, training, certification, and performance appraisals; criteria‑based, non‑competitive. Forklift operator certification within six months of hire. Valid Class D Arizona driver’s license by hire. Respirator qualification per CFR 1910.134 and maintain certification. 40‑hour HazWoper certification and annual eight‑hour refresher. Minimum 30 professional development hours every three years for ADEQ certification maintenance. Obtain Grade I (or higher) Wastewater Treatment System Operator certification within one year of hire, or use reciprocity within three months. Pre‑employment or pre‑placement alcohol, drug, and controlled‑substance testing.
