Responsibilities:1. Clinical Care
The Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive assessment, triage, and management of patient and family needs throughout the disease process as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Working in inpatient, ambulatory, and outpatient settings, the NP/PA delivers high-quality patient care across diagnostic, treatment, and prognostic phases.
The NP/PA collaborates with supervising or collaborating physicians in accordance with state laws, hospital regulations, policies, clinical pathways, and protocols. Depending on specialty and scope, the role may include autonomous, team-based care for designated patient populations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Obtaining medical histories and performing physical examinations
- Ordering, reviewing, and interpreting diagnostic and therapeutic tests, including imaging
- Developing and managing patient treatment plans
- Prescribing medications and treatments consistent with institutional and state guidelines
- Performing clinical procedures within professional scope and competency
In select specialties, the NP/PA may assist as a first or second assistant in surgical procedures when educational and credentialing requirements are met. Additional clinical responsibilities may include responding to emergency situations in alignment with YNHHS policies.
2. Patient Education & Psychosocial Support
The NP/PA educates patients and families about diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, side effects, and available resources. In collaboration with the supervising physician, this may include admission instructions, ongoing care guidance, and discharge planning.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, the NP/PA provides compassionate psychosocial support to patients, families, and significant others, maintaining ethical and professional standards of care.
3. Information Management
The NP/PA ensures accurate, timely, and complete documentation in compliance with hospital, legal, and regulatory requirements. They are responsible for safeguarding patient information in all formats to prevent unauthorized access, alteration, or disclosure.
4. Quality Management
The NP/PA demonstrates professionalism, ethical conduct, compassion, and a strong commitment to patient care. Responsibilities include maintaining compliance with all applicable healthcare regulations, standards, and best-practice recommendations while consistently promoting patient safety and quality outcomes.
5. Professional Development
The NP/PA actively engages in ongoing professional development to maintain and enhance clinical competency. Responsibilities may include:
- Serving as a clinical resource and educator for new staff and trainees
- Participating in service-specific orientation and educational initiatives
- Reporting safety events and near-misses to support high-reliability practices
- Maintaining all licensure, certification, and employee requirements
- Precepting NP/PA students and mentoring other healthcare professionals
- Collaborating on research, quality improvement, performance improvement initiatives, and protocol development to advance clinical prac tice
EDUCATION
- Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
EXPERIENCE
- Clinical working experience as an NP/PA in the specialty/service line is preferred but not required.
- APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS hospital and go through the Medical Staff credentialing process. To be eligible, evidence of current competence to practice as an APRN, PA, CRNA, or CNM must be provided. This includes obtaining appropriate reference letters from physicians and other practitioners during the Medical Staff appointment process.
LICENSURE
- Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), Connecticut State Physician Assistant License, ACLS/BLS Certified, when indicated for position profile DEA License.
- Pediatric position profile PALS, when indicated for neonatal care NRP Certification.
- Additional licensure, certifications and/or continuing education credits may be required during employment based on position and area of specialty. OR Connecticut State Registered Nurse License, Connecticut State Nurse Practitioner License, Board specialty certification, as appropriate for position profile ACLS/BLS Certified, when indicated for position profile DEA License.
