About the Role

The Dishwasher position at Somerset High School is essential to maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen environment that supports the overall food service operations. The primary goal of this role is to ensure that all dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized in compliance with health and safety standards. This position contributes directly to the smooth functioning of meal service by managing the timely turnover of clean items. The Dishwasher will work closely with kitchen staff to uphold hygiene standards and support food preparation activities. Ultimately, this role helps create a positive dining experience for students and staff by ensuring cleanliness and order in the kitchen area.

Job Responsibilities

• Wash, sanitize, and organize dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment using commercial dishwashing machines and manual cleaning methods.
• Maintain cleanliness of the dishwashing area, including floors, sinks, and counters, to comply with health and safety regulations.
• Assist kitchen staff by transporting clean items to appropriate storage areas and restocking supplies as needed.
• Handle waste disposal and recycling in accordance with school policies and environmental guidelines.
• Stand for extended periods and lift heavy items safely to support kitchen operations during meal preparation and service times.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic reading skills to understand cleaning instructions and safety guidelines.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds safely.
• Capability to stand for extended periods during work shifts.
• Prior experience or familiarity with food service sanitation standards is preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working in a commercial kitchen or food service environment.
• Knowledge of proper sanitization techniques and health code regulations.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with kitchen staff.

Skills

The required skills such as basic reading enable the Dishwasher to follow cleaning protocols and safety instructions accurately. Sanitization skills are critical for ensuring all kitchenware meets health standards, preventing contamination and promoting a safe dining environment. Physical abilities like lifting heavy weights and standing for long periods are essential for managing the physical demands of the role, including handling large pots and continuous dishwashing tasks. Food service knowledge helps the Dishwasher understand the importance of timely and thorough cleaning to support meal preparation and service.
