Compensation and Benefits 5% maximum incentive pay for qualifying Truck Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) Certifications Additional 1% maximum incentive pay for Advanced (ASE) Certifications F1 and/or L2 $35 bi‑weekly Technician Tool Allowance Longevity pay at 4.0% for employees with 10 years of County employment Eligibility to participate in the County’s Vacation Cash‑In policy, allowing cash‑in of up to 40 hours annually for eligible employees Job Overview Under general supervision, diagnose, repair, maintain, and service gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternatively fueled vehicles including medium and heavy‑duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, and diesel‑driven generators. Knowledge Basic theory, operation, and principles of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternatively fueled internal combustion engines in all vehicle types mentioned above Methods, materials, tools, power equipment, and parts used in the maintenance and repair of these vehicles Repair and service procedures for these vehicles Hydraulic and air brake systems Electrical, carburetion, and cooling systems Torque converters, automatic and standard transmissions, hydraulic pumps, motors, and control values Standard shop safety procedures Abilities Recognize and diagnose technical problems of the vehicles listed above Properly repair and adjust those vehicles and their component parts Read and understand automotive and equipment operating manuals and schematics Visually detect conditions that affect safe operation of equipment Improvise repair of equipment when necessary Build and maintain cooperative relationships with customers, co‑workers, and private repair vendors Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing Assess situations accurately and choose an effective course of action Effectively organize and prioritize work assignments Follow verbal and written instructions Use tools and equipment safely to repair and rebuild vehicles, including handling automotive, medium and heavy‑duty trucks, buses, and construction equipment Work safely in and around automobiles and heavy equipment Safely drive the vehicles listed above for relocation and repair work Maintain accurate service and repair records Minimum Qualifications Either: • Three years of full‑time paid experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the vehicles described in the Job Overview. Or: • Three years of full‑time paid experience in the Sacramento County class of Fleet Service Worker. Coursework in an accredited program related to Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Heavy Maintenance Equipment Repair, or Construction Equipment Repair may substitute for up to two years of experience on a 2.5‑semester‑unit basis. General Qualifications Qualified applicants must provide proof of required education or certificates listed above, if applicable. Failure to provide proof may result in disqualification from the examination. License Requirements A California Driver License, Class C or higher, must be held at the time of appointment. A Class A or B license and/or hazardous materials, tank vehicle, and/or passenger endorsements may be required. Individuals under 21 requiring endorsements must obtain them within six months of meeting the age requirement. Physical Requirements Sense of smell, vision, touch, and hearing sufficient to observe equipment function and shop conditions Ability to work in cramped or awkward body positions, including bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, and reaching Ability to walk on uneven surfaces, stairs, and climb ladders Work while wearing approved personal protective equipment as required Lift, carry, and transport objects up to 100 pounds with or without assistance Distinguish colors for electrical wiring identification Read gauges and meters accurately Manipulate objects of varying shapes and sizes with precision Working Conditions Work outdoors in all climatic conditions, including hot, cold, and inclement weather Exposure to automotive/heavy equipment repair environment, including exhaust fumes, chemicals, hazardous waste, solvents, asbestos, acids, flammable materials, and welding torches Work around high noise levels Operate in tight spaces that may be hot and humid Work at heights of six feet or more Work non‑routine hours, including day, swing, graveyard shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and standby periods Probationary Period The probationary period for this classification is six months.
