Electrical Design Engineer Power Distribution & Controls

Role Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to support the engineering and production of medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution equipment. This position is responsible for translating customer specifications and project requirements into accurate electrical designs, drawings, BOMs, wiring documentation, and manufacturing release packages.

The role works closely with drafting, manufacturing, purchasing, testing, quality, project management, and equipment vendors to ensure designs are technically accurate and ready for production.

Equipment Focus

• Medium- and low-voltage switchgear.
• Medium- and low-voltage motor control centers.
• Power distribution and control equipment.
• Breakers, protective relays, metering, control power, and associated electrical components.

Primary Responsibilities

• Develop and review electrical designs for switchgear, MCCs, and related power distribution equipment.
• Produce and review one-lines, three-lines, power and control schematics, wiring diagrams, point-to-point drawings, layouts, and manufacturing documentation.
• Translate customer specifications, one-lines, project requirements, and engineering comments into production-ready designs.
• Develop and verify BOMs, including component quantities, ratings, options, and project-specific requirements.
• Select and review electrical components including breakers, starters, relays, CTs, PTs, CPTs, meters, terminal blocks, control transformers, test switches, and protective devices.
• Develop and review breaker control circuits, relay schemes, control power, metering, indication, interlocking, alarms, transfer schemes, and auxiliary controls.
• Review vendor drawings and engineered equipment submittals for compliance with project requirements and electrical designs.
• Resolve discrepancies between drawings, wiring documentation, BOMs, and vendor-supplied equipment.
• Provide technical support to manufacturing, wiring, testing, QA, purchasing, project management, and field personnel.
• Support drawing revisions, design changes, as-built documentation, and technical review of change requests.
• Assist with troubleshooting production, testing, field, and equipment issues related to electrical design.
• Contribute to engineering standards, typical designs, drawing templates, BOM practices, and design review procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Experience in electrical engineering or electrical design involving power distribution, switchgear, MCCs, industrial controls, control panels, or similar electrical equipment.
• Ability to read and develop one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, point-to-point drawings, equipment layouts, and BOMs.
• Understanding of circuit breakers, starters, relays, CTs, PTs, CPTs, meters, control transformers, terminal blocks, and protective devices.
• Experience developing or reviewing electrical BOMs and component selections.
• Ability to coordinate effectively with drafting, manufacturing, testing, and project teams.
• Strong attention to detail involving electrical drawings, wiring, component ratings, quantities, and manufacturing documentation.
• Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and provide clear engineering direction to production personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with switchgear, MCC, electrical equipment, or power distribution equipment manufacturing.
• Experience with medium-voltage metal-clad switchgear and low-voltage switchgear.
• Familiarity with medium- and low-voltage motor control centers.
• Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, UL, NEMA, and NEC requirements applicable to power distribution and motor control equipment.
• Experience reviewing vendor drawings and engineered equipment submittals.
• Experience developing wiring diagrams and point-to-point documentation for manufacturing.
• Experience supporting electrical equipment production, testing, QA, field service, or warranty activities.
• Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems used in an engineered manufacturing environment.
