The Phoenix Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the role of School Resource Officer (SRO). This position plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and faculty across assigned school campuses. SROs serve as visible deterrents to threats, respond to emergencies, and build positive relationships within the school community. Responsibilities Monitor school grounds, buildings, and parking areas during operational hours. Enforce laws and ordinances; make arrests and manage all aspects of detainment. Direct traffic and enforce traffic laws around school zones. Communicate effectively via police radio, phone, written reports, and in-person interactions. Respond to emergencies and maintain readiness for physically demanding situations. Participate in ongoing training and maintain annual firearms qualifications. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to address criminal activity. Assist in crisis management planning and emergency drills. Deliver educational programs on safety, bullying, substance abuse, and more. Investigate school-related incidents and maintain documentation. Mediate student conflicts using restorative practices. Maintain AZPOST certification throughout employment. Conduct safety audits and threat assessments. These temporary positions are grant funded through the Arizona Department of Education with an expected duration up to one year. These temporary positions will have benefits but will not earn city retirement credits or participate financially into the city's retirement program. Temporary positions are not covered under civil service rules, and thus employment is considered “at‑will”, and employees may be separated at any time. IDEAL CANDIDATE Demonstrate Proficiency In U.S. and Arizona Constitutions, criminal and traffic laws, and court decisions. Campus security operations and violence prevention strategies. Conflict resolution and de‑escalation techniques. Surveillance and safety monitoring technologies. Situational awareness and safety protocols. SALARY Pay And Hiring Range $48.17 - $52.88 hourly The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Minimum Qualifications Honorably (non‑medically) retired police officer from the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System. Must have current Arizona POST certification, or the ability to regain certification prior to employment start date. Must be qualified to carry and use chemical agents, restraints, batons, tasers and other non‑lethal defensive weapons. Must be able to obtain and maintain first aid, AED, CPR, and Narcan certifications; current certifications preferred. All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Positions in the Police Department must meet the polygraph and background standards that are appropriate to sworn positions. The general factors for disqualification are listed here. Preferred Qualifications Prior service as an SRO or experience working directly with youth in educational environments. Certification or documented training in crisis intervention, restorative justice, or trauma‑informed practices. Demonstrated history of building trust and relationships with diverse communities, especially youth and families. Experience delivering presentations and/or educational programs on safety, bullying prevention, substance abuse, and legal awareness. Fluency in Spanish or other languages commonly spoken in the Phoenix community. Experience preparing detailed incident reports, legal documentation, and court testimony.
