Job Summary:
The Certified Operating Room Technician (CST) plays a vital role in surgical services by providing skilled technical assistance in the operating room. This position requires expertise in orthopedic (total joints, sports medicine, trauma) and spine procedures. The CST is responsible for preparing the operating room, assisting surgical teams during procedures, and ensuring patient safety. On-call availability and strong collaboration with surgical and clinical staff are essential.
Responsibilities:
The Certified Operating Room Technician (CST) plays a vital role in surgical services by providing skilled technical assistance in the operating room. This position requires expertise in orthopedic (total joints, sports medicine, trauma) and spine procedures. The CST is responsible for preparing the operating room, assisting surgical teams during procedures, and ensuring patient safety. On-call availability and strong collaboration with surgical and clinical staff are essential.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are sterile and available.
- Assist surgeons and surgical staff during operations by passing instruments and managing equipment.
- Maintain a sterile environment and adhere to infection control protocols.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including nurses, anesthesiologists, and surgeons.
- Perform equipment checks and troubleshoot technical issues during surgeries.
- Document surgical procedures and materials used according to hospital policies.
- Respond to on-call duties as required, including weekends, maintaining readiness for emergency surgical cases.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by NBSTSA.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Experience in orthopedic surgeries including total joints, sports medicine, trauma, and spine.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, acute care hospital environment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant surgical technology experience.
- Experience with Epic charting system.
- Additional certifications or training related to critical care or emergency surgical procedures.
- On-call required: 100 hours per 4-week schedule period, including weekends.
- Float between surgical units as needed.
- Strict adherence to sterile technique and infection control policies.
- 1:1 staff-to-patient ratio during surgical procedures.
- No block schedules or 48-hour shifts approved.
- Work schedule includes on-call shifts with availability required on weekends.
- Shifts are assigned based on surgical unit needs and on-call rotation.
