Aircraft Mechanic I, Powerplant
$37.57 per hourAmentum Services, Inc.
Amentum is immediately hiring qualified Aircraft Power Plants Mechanic I’s in support of U.S. Navy Aviation maintenance operations at NAS Oceana Virginia Beach, VA. The role involves troubleshooting malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti‑icing, pneumatic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems. The mechanic repairs, replaces, and rebuilds aircraft structures—including wings and fuselage—and functional components such as rigging, surface controls, plumbing, and hydraulic units. Tasks include reading and interpreting manufacturer’s and airline’s maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, and engineering data to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components. The mechanic performs inspections—including progressive, phase, periodic, and other hourly, conditional, or calendar inspections—examines reciprocating engines for cracked cylinders and oil leaks, listens to operating engines to detect malfunctions, and inspects jet engines and components for cracks, corrosion, foreign object damage, and other defects. The position requires using testing equipment such as ignition analyzers, compression checkers, distributor timers, ammeters, and jet calibration testers to locate sources of malfunction. The mechanic also replaces or repairs worn or damaged components, removes engines for disassembly and inspection, and re‑assembles and installs engines in aircraft. Additional duties include adjusting, repairing, or replacing electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories, performing preflight, thru‑flight, and post‑flight maintenance inspections, and conducting miscellaneous activities such as flushing crankcases, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes. The incumbent supervises jacking and towing of aircraft, enters maintenance records, verifies work completion, and may service engines and airframe components at line station, making repairs short of overhaul. The worker may be required to be licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration and must pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check and an EQIP fingerprint trace. Unfavorable background checks may lead to termination if ineligibility for a CAC card is determined. Minimum Requirements Shift work and detachments are required. Work is performed primarily outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes. Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Must be a self‑motivator and work with minimum supervision. Must meet physical requirements and pass any medical examination required for daily tasks. There is a great deal of standing, climbing, bending, and stooping. May be required to perform off‑site service on assigned detachments. Must obtain an approved status from the Contractor Verification system, which includes a 7‑year background check.
