Summary:
The Nurse Educator RN serves as the clinical expert and drives evidenced based clinical practice for all staff; has responsibility for assessing unit nursing practice and its impact on patient outcomes; leads and provides clinical direction to nursing staff in the delivery of patient care programs; ensures licensed staff maintains an established level of clinical competency; assumes ongoing responsibilities for the coordination of department orientation and education for all personnel; oversees the clinical direction of unit specific orientation, staff development, skills training, continuing education, staff education records and participation in quality, safety, and satisfaction programs; provides direct care to patients using the Nursing Process as needed to model best practice; supports collaborative environment through partnering with unit leadership and through coaching, mentoring and counseling as needed.
Responsibilities:
Displays clinical reasoning, which includes clinical decision making, critical thinking, and a holistic view of a given situation, coupled with nursing skills through a process of integrating formal and experiential knowledge; plans unit preceptorships and actively participates in review process of new staff; progresses staff toward independent function through collaboration with preceptors, unit leadership, physicians and other department leaders; guides the planning and participation of unit staff to provide organization and unit-specific in-services and training of preceptors and assignments for new staff; guides the growth and competency development of orientees, including recommendations regarding further educational training; mentors, coaches and leads nursing personnel to provide safe and effective evidence based care in a rapidly changing environment or critical situation; monitors and supports new organizational and/or unit practices through audit, observation and other methodologies; counsels staff informally and formally to ensure recognition and support of practice initiatives and priorities at all levels of the organization; integrates advanced technologies with clinical practice to enhance learning and adoption at the unit level and organizationally when appropriate; promotes a healthy supportive learning environment utilizing adult learning concepts; takes complex material to the level of the learner; initiates and/or participates in nursing research; models behavior that is conducive to the education of students, externs and other healthcare professionals that meets the standards for professional practice and clinical competency as set forth by ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) and ANA (American Nursing Association).
Creates practice changes through research utilization and experiential learning; assists nursing staff in accessing nursing databases available for resources to support evidence based practice; role models proactive efforts to achieve optimal patient care outcomes based on identified initiatives, best practice and evidenced based guideline score measures, medication reconciliation, etc.; identifies and assesses learning needs for healthcare providers in the assigned area using evidenced based data and tools (including skills inventories, occurrence reports, performance improvement data, staff skills inventory, patient surveys, and feedback from staff, patients, physicians and administration, etc.) in order to identify specific education needs and to implement, evaluate, and facilitate clinical competence at the bedside; promotes the delivery of quality, cost effective care. Maintains a body of knowledge and tools that facilitate the management of environmental and system resources that exist for the patient/family and staff, within or across healthcare and non-healthcare systems; collaborates in the development and revision of clinically based department policies, procedures and standards of care to assure best practice; utilizes clinical education as a strategy to ensure continuity of clinical practice for self and unit staff; protects patient/family and staff members from harm through active advocacy; demonstrates the ability to recognize risk management concerns and take action to prevent future occurrences.
Actively participates in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to ensure appropriate clinical follow-up is achieved based on RCA outcomes including but not limited to referral of nursing staff to peer review; guides the staff to evaluate factors such as safety, effectiveness, availability, cost benefits and impact on practice when choosing practice options that would yield the same expected outcomes; attends Clinical Education Committee (CEC) to promote organizational approaches to education needs; acts as a liaison between department and other nursing areas, and medical staff to promote competent and quality care across the continuum.
Works with others in a way that promotes/encourages each person's contributions towards achieving optimal, realistic patient/family goals. Involves intra and interdisciplinary work with colleagues and community; demonstrates the leadership skills necessary to establish expectations, develop plans to measure, assess, and improve the quality of care provided by staff members; supports and identifies programs ensuring continuing education of all staff members in order to meet organizational goals and individual position competencies;; facilitates the learning of a standard reporting system (SBAR) to effectively communicate patient care needs; role models the hospital mission and values by communicating effectively with colleagues, physicians, hospital departments and other hospital resources; acts as a liaison between department and other areas including medical staff to promote competency and continuum of care.
Displays Nursing activities that create a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patient and staff, with the aim of promoting comfort and healing and preventing unnecessary suffering, including vigilance, engagement, and responsiveness of caregivers, including family and healthcare personnel; maintains and demonstrates expertise in performing basic and advanced nursing skills required by the assigned clinical area consistent with standards of care and hospital procedures; integrates advanced knowledge of functional health patterns, pathophysiology, and psychosociology, in the clinical management of a specified population of patients; makes clinical rounds with staff and/or physicians to enhance knowledge base and model best practice for patient care; demonstrates and communicates understanding of the national trends for patient quality and safety; acts as a clinical resource to promote the learning experience for others; participates in patient care conferences, both formal and informal, as needed; assists in the identification, development, teaching, and evaluation of performance improvement activities and strategies.
Works on another's behalf and representing the concerns of the patient/family and nursing staff; serving as a moral agent in identifying and helping to resolve ethical and clinical concerns within and outside the clinical setting; demonstrates compassion for the patient/families situation as evidenced by team/family feedback; assists staff in recognizing the need for moral decision making and the development of an alternative plan when needed; role models awareness of patient and family rights. Practice is consistent with the American Nurses Association "Code of Ethics for Nurses" (2001 Approved Provision); reports illegal, incompetent or impaired practices to appropriate department and/or individual; mentors, coaches or counsels staff as needed in these circumstances in collaboration with unit leadership.
