This role involves providing care to these patients through the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources within the philosophy of the institution. The RN performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service. He/she implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided is essential for ensuring the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. The RN completes an initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care based on patient and family needs. He/she implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifications to the plan of care are made based on continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Communication with others is conducted directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues. Constructive feedback is offered to assist in the professional development of peers, and conferring with colleagues occurs to expand the knowledge base. Identifying one’s learning needs and taking initiative to begin appropriate solutions is critical. The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies. Specific job functions include assessing orthopedic and medical/surgical patients every shift. Education of orthopedic and medical/surgical patients on wound care, proper mobility, self-care, medication management, care transition needs, and any additional patient-specific needs is required. Coordination with physician and surgeon partners on the care of orthopedic and medical/surgical patients is essential. Delegation and monitoring of interventions by the healthcare team staff is necessary. Setting up orthopedic traction and manipulating surgical traction devices for mobility and wound care are part of the role. Management of wound appliances such as wound vacs, drains, pouches, and other urological devices is expected.
