Lead Automation, Sensing and Control Engineer

Overview The Lead Automation, Sensing and Control Engineer will maintain, analyze, troubleshoot, and program complex industrial machinery/controls and IT systems for the Schenectady Cores and Castings manufacturing plant within GE VERNOVA Gas Power in Schenectady, NY. Role and Responsibilities Implement global standards from the 1P1P in automation and robotics processes throughout SCC facility. Design, develop and implement factory automation and robotic systems to enhance safety, improve production quality, streamline manufacturing processes, and increase productivity. Serve as focal point for new technology introductions, process improvements, fixturing, control plans, and qualification of new manufacturing assets. Design, develop, prototype, and test innovative automated solutions and robotic systems and components. Integrate hardware, software, and sensors (such as LiDAR, cameras, and IMUs) into automation platforms. Program robots for specific tasks including motion control, path planning, and autonomous navigation. Integrate industrial automation devices into PLC logic (motion, vision, touch, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical). Conduct simulations and tests to validate performance and reliability under real‑world conditions. Support design reviews with stakeholders and integration partners to determine equipment requirements. Ensure compliance with industry safety and regulatory standards and GE Vernova EHS requirements. Act as technical expert for controls systems on machine tools, robotics, and IT systems; troubleshoot and debug complex automation and robotic systems. Lead point of contact with controls equipment OEMs and parts vendors. Analyze IT system/machinery controls failures, identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and implement with maintenance team or external suppliers. Perform routine systems maintenance including patching servers, adding equipment to FMS, creating HMIs, managing tags and access to Historian, and maintaining firewall rules. Document and revise technical specifications, process maps, electro‑mechanical drawings, test plans, and maintenance procedures. Assist in integrating automation and AI into manufacturing systems as needed. Manage projects on schedule and budget, providing timely communication to stakeholders. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define requirements and ensure seamless integration. Contribute to Kaizen, Lean, built‑in‑quality initiatives, management of change, safety risk assessments and LOTO on all designed equipment. Work effectively in a fast‑paced environment, driving positive change inside and outside the organization. Maintain a hands‑on presence on the production floor, participate in Gemba walks, and check‑in with operators, maintenance, and leaders. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Electronics, Manufacturing Engineering or related field. Minimum six years of industrial experience designing and deploying factory automation and robotics. Proficient with control networks: Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, MTConnect, OPC‑UA, Modbus, ProfiNet, Profibus. Expertise with PLCs, sensor/actuator integration, HMIs, SCADA, robotics, FMS. Proficiency in industrial communication protocols: Fieldbus, Ethernet, Serial, Wireless. Knowledge of plant manufacturing systems, electrical/controls technology, vision and barcode scanning, servo controllers, speed variators, analog/digital signals. Programming languages: C++, Python. Experience with Allen Bradley, Rockwell Automation, Roboguide. Functional knowledge of robotics set‑up, application and manipulation; electrical panel layouts. Ability to understand, interpret, and create written technical information (engineering drawings, ladder logic, machine manuals, SOPs). Strong interpersonal, communication skills and teamwork ability. Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and committed to continuous improvement. Grasp of control theory, kinematics, dynamics. Effective problem‑solving and analytical skills focused on applied automation and robotics. Demonstrated ability to analyze, resolve problems, document, plan, market, and execute programs; project management skills. Legal U.S. work authorization; no visa sponsorship. Willingness to work on‑site in Niskayuna, NY. Export control restrictions apply; requires clearance for U.S. export‑controlled information. Desired Qualifications Experience with CAD (NX, SolidWorks). Experience with machine learning and AI applications in robotics. Professional credentials: Certified Robotics Engineer (CRE), Certified Automation Professional (CAP), or OEM certifications (FANUC, ABB, Rockwell). Strong leadership and coordination skills; manage multiple projects. Excellent problem identification and solution skills. Deep manufacturing technical expertise.
