Physician - Anesthesiologist

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree from an allopathic or osteopathic medical school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Residency training: completed an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑US residency training followed by a minimum three years of verified independent practice in the United States. Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency training programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs), provided they are fully licensed physicians and are appointed on an intermittent basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and are not privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Rare and unusual circumstances may be approved by the Facility Director with memo to the VISN Director and Chief Medical Officer. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirements Board Certified or Eligible in Anesthesiology (preferred). Five years of experience in anesthesia practice, including advanced techniques and complex surgical cases, with a particular focus on cardiac anesthesia. Extensive knowledge and hands‑on experience with cardiac anesthesia techniques and protocols. Specific experience with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and other cardiac monitoring modalities. Work experience in a Veterans Affairs hospital or similar healthcare setting highly desirable. Close visual acuity required for preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, and repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must complete annual employee health requirements such as TB screening or testing. Work Environment Work performed in a healthcare setting with adequate lighting, heating, and cooling. May involve exposure to infection and contagious diseases; standard precautions and isolation techniques employed. Occasional response to physical and/or verbal abuse by patients may require knowledge gained from ongoing violence‑in‑the‑workplace training. Duties Provide patient care, address medical problems, and practice within scope of privileges; arrive in clinic on time and attend outpatient clinics. Maintain board certification (if board certified); meet CME requirements; participate in resident/student training. Engage in practice‑based learning and improvement through work groups, committees, or departmental learning activities and integrate new knowledge into care. Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills; appropriate EMR entries in time and content. Offer consultative evaluations, treatment, and follow‑up recommendations. Show professionalism; participate in peer reviews and committees; maintain absence of disruptive or unprofessional behavior. Comply with systems‑based practice, safety, security, and privacy policies; arrange clinical coverage during planned absences and comply with hand‑off communication policy. Participate in recruitment incentive (sign‑on bonus: not authorized); EDRP authorized. Compensation: competitive salary with annual performance bonus; regular salary increases; 50‑55 days paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and possible 5 days paid absence for CME); retirement: traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by VA.
