Burlington High School is seeking a school counselor who will help students succeed academically, plan for life after graduation, and navigate personal and social challenges. The counselor works with students, families, staff, and community partners under the direction of the building principal.



Key responsibilities

• Review, update, and implement the Kansas Comprehensive School Counseling Program at Burlington High School.
• Provide individual and group counseling and classroom guidance related to students' academic, career, personal, and social needs.
• Help students develop Individual Plans of Study and explore college, technical training, career, and employment opportunities.
• Share information about scholarships, financial aid, and NCAA/NAIA eligibility; coordinate related communications and events.
• Coordinate student testing, including applicable ACT, PreACT, PSAT, WorkKeys, ASVAB, FastBridge, and state assessments.
• Serve as the building's Section 504 coordinator and lead the Student Improvement Team's screening, pre-assessment, and intervention work.
• Consult with families and staff about student progress, behavior, and trauma-informed supports; connect students with community services when appropriate.
• Support student orientation and transitions, course assignments, and development of the master schedule.
• Maintain accurate, confidential student records and participate in professional development and other duties assigned by the principal.

Required qualifications

• A valid Kansas school specialist license with a School Counselor endorsement , or eligibility to obtain the appropriate Kansas license and endorsement before beginning the position.
• Completion of an approved graduate-level school counselor preparation program and a graduate degree, as required for Kansas initial school counselor licensure.
• Ability to meet district background-check requirements.

Preferred qualifications

• Three or more years of school counseling or related student advisement experience.
• Experience teaching grades 7-12.
• Familiarity with Kansas career-planning tools, Xello, mandated reporting, and applicable education laws.

The successful candidate will communicate well with students, families, and staff; maintain confidentiality; stay organized; and build positive working relationships. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and student information systems is helpful.
