Athletic Trainer

I. DEFINITION : Under the direction of the site administrator and Athletic Director, the Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive athletic health services including injury prevention, evaluation, emergency care, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play coordination for student-athletes participating in Atascadero High School athletics and affiliated programs. The Athletic Trainer also serves as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches, parents, school nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals, ensuring safe participation in all athletic activities. Safety and well-being of the student-athlete is the highest priority. This position also supports Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways in patient care, sports medicine, and health sciences through student engagement, observation, supervised experiential learning, and hands‑on supervised participation for CTE pathway students. II. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS : Prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses Immediate emergency care including first aid, CPR, AED use, splinting, and activation of EMS when needed Concussion protocols including baseline testing, evaluation, follow‑up management, documentation, and return‑to‑play clearance procedures in alignment with current best practices and CIF guidelines Daily athletic training room operations and coverage of practices, competitions (home and away), tournaments, and special events, including evenings, weekends, variable hours, and schedule adjustments due to athletic schedule changes Travel with athletic teams, including all varsity football games and designated away competitions as assigned On‑call availability for athletic emergencies, after‑hours events, and high‑risk sporting events as needed Emergency communication and coordination with coaches, administration, EMS, parents, and medical providers during athletic incidents Communication with coaches, Athletic Director, parents, nurses, and physicians regarding athlete status, care plans, and return‑to‑play clearance Implementation of physician‑directed rehabilitation and treatment protocols Maintenance and monitoring of student‑athlete health status, injury trends, and ongoing care plans Support for student‑athlete safety during competition with emphasis on safe participation and game‑time readiness Maintenance of injury records, treatment logs, insurance documentation, blue cards, filing systems, and compliance records in accordance with FERPA/HIPAA guidelines Organization and management of athletic training documentation systems and paperwork compliance Support of student‑athlete hydration, safety readiness, and field/court emergency preparedness (including water distribution and sideline readiness supplies) Maintenance, organization, sanitation, and inventory of athletic training room and medical supplies Supervision and mentoring of student aides and CTE Health/Patient Care pathway students under appropriate guidelines, including observation hours and hands‑on supervised learning experiences Collaboration with CTE programs to provide real‑world exposure to sports medicine, injury prevention, and patient care careers. Assistance with athletic event setup, sideline coverage, and post‑event care as needed, including health screening nights and athletic event coverage nights. Support athletic department operations including coordination with Athletic Director on scheduling, coverage needs, and emergency planning. Attendance at preseason meetings, parent education nights, coach trainings, CIF updates/training, and safety/injury prevention meetings. Monitoring safety conditions of practice and competition environments and recommending corrective action as needed. III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Education & Certification : Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Health Science, Physical Education, or related field Master’s degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE‑accredited program preferred Current Board of Certification (BOC) Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) in good standing Current CPR/AED certification (Professional Rescuer or equivalent) First Aid certification TB clearance Valid California Driver’s License DOJ/FBI fingerprint clearance required IV. EXPERIENCE : Minimum one (1) year of experience in athletic training, physical therapy, sports medicine, or related clinical setting required Three to four (3–4) years of experience in secondary school or collegiate athletics preferred Experience supporting youth athletic programs and managing high‑volume sports coverage preferred V. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES : Principles of athletic training, exercise science, kinesiology, physiology, and nutrition Injury evaluation, emergency response, rehabilitation, and return‑to‑play protocols Concussion protocols, heat illness prevention, and emergency action planning Knowledge of CIF regulations, school athletic policies, and medical clearance procedures Ability to adapt to flexible and changing athletic schedules, including evenings, weekends, and travel requirements Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills Ability to communicate effectively with families in both routine and emergency situations Ability to manage multiple priorities in high‑pressure, fast‑paced environments Ability to maintain and organize documentation systems including injury logs, blue cards, filing systems, and compliance records Ability to supervise student aides and CTE pathway students in structured experiential learning environments Ability to work collaboratively with diverse student populations, staff, families, and medical professionals Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional discretion at all times Ability to independently make sound clinical judgments within scope of practice VI. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES : Provide on‑site injury assessment and emergency care for student‑athletes Develop and implement rehabilitation programs under physician guidance Apply preventative taping, bracing, and protective equipment Maintain daily communication with Athletic Director regarding athlete status and program needs Track and manage all injury documentation, medical referrals, blue cards, filing systems, and return‑to‑play clearances Coordinate with physicians regarding diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation plans Assist with physical exam coordination and medical clearance compliance Educate athletes on injury prevention, hydration, nutrition, and safe training practices Ensure training room is clean, safe, and fully operational at all times Maintain inventory, order supplies, and manage medical kits for all sports programs Participate in emergency action plan development and drills Provide coverage for multiple sports seasons including overlapping schedules Assist with athletic event operations, including sideline support and emergency response readiness, health screening nights, and athletic event coverage nights Support CTE pathways in patient care, sports medicine, and health‑related instructional programs through supervised engagement, observation hours, and hands‑on learning opportunities Assist with athlete insurance documentation and injury reporting systems Travel to athletic competitions as assigned, including away football games and postseason events Maintain compliance with CIF updates, required trainings, and district athletic safety protocols Provide on‑call and flexible coverage support based on athletic scheduling needs and emergency situations Perform other related duties as assigned by administration or Athletic Director VII. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS : Extended standing, walking, running, bending, kneeling, and lifting Ability to lift, carry, push, or move up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally Exposure to outdoor conditions including heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain Work in loud and high‑activity athletic environments Ability to respond quickly to emergencies in dynamic settings Frequent evening, weekend, variable‑hour, and travel requirements Dexterity required for taping, splinting, and use of medical equipment Visual and auditory acuity required for injury assessment and emergency response VIII. HAZARDS : Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids Risk of contact with communicable diseases and athletic injuries Exposure to unpredictable emergency situations requiring immediate response IX. SUPERVISION : Reports directly to the Site Principal and Athletic Director. Works collaboratively with school nurses, coaches, district administration, and medical professionals. X.
