RN-Intensive Care Unit – Cardiothoracic

Job Summary: The Clinical Nurse provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Report to the Nurse Manager/Director, the nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Essential Duties:

• Education: Participates in identifying and meeting personal learning needs. Attends education programs based on identified learning needs. Utilizes patient education materials relevant to the patient population. Assesses the readiness to learn of patients, families, and caregivers. Evaluates developmental levels of patients and factors affecting their ability to learn.
• Evaluation of Care: Identifies expected patient outcomes. Seeks guidance for revising patient care plans as needed. Engages in discussions with interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care evaluation. Communicates relevant information to ensure continuity of care.
• Implementation: Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex issues, addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs. Performs bedside point of care testing as necessary for patient care plans. Utilizes nursing standards, policies, and procedures in care delivery. Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient and family needs. Consults appropriate resources promptly regarding complex care issues and discharge planning.
• Leadership: Develops professional growth goals with assistance. Aims for achievement within identified timelines or renegotiates with supervisor. Facilitates intra/interdepartmental collaboration. Contributes to unit goals and performance improvement activities. Uses communication systems effectively. Promotes cost-effective care. Provides feedback to colleagues. Stays informed about public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting healthcare. Ensures a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment.
• Patient Assessment: Recognizes data from complex situations to establish care priorities. Incorporates appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs in assessments. Synthesizes assessment data for clear communication. Anticipates discharge needs for individual patients and families. Builds relationships with families to empower advocacy for patients.
• Planning: Collaborates with patients and families to develop or update care plans. Utilizes multidisciplinary resources in care planning. Employs comprehensive communication strategies during planning. Addresses cultural and ethnic considerations in patient care planning. Prioritizes tasks effectively for patients with complex needs.
• Research: Reviews relevant journals to identify applicable studies or articles. Brings ideas and questions to the staff for discussion and applicability assessment.

Required Skills & Experience:

• One (1) year of nursing experience.

Education:

• Required: Nursing Diploma or ADN/ASN from an accredited school of Nursing.
• Preferred: BSN or MSN from an accredited school of Nursing.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

• Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification (AHA or ARC).
