Job Title – After School Assistant Teacher

FLSA Classification – Non-exempt

Salary Grade - Regular, Part-time, 20 hours/week, $21.50 - $22.15 per hour

Report to – Director of School Aged Programs

Work environment – 1737 NW 26th Ave. Portland, OR 97210

Schedule – Monday through Friday, 1:30-5:30pm. Hours vary for school in-service days, conference days, winter break, and spring break. This is an in-person position. Work is not remote.

Supervision – None

Date – July 2026

This position is union-eligible and is represented by ILWU Local 5.

Job Description - Summary

This position will support planning and implementing safe, developmentally appropriate activities with the responsibility of managing their group of children and supporting the Teacher. The After School Assistant Teacher will ensure the enrichment, social development, health, and safety of children in the After School Program. This job is performed in classrooms at Friendly House, Chapman School, Wallace Park, and the two-block walking route between Friendly House and the Chapman campus. This position will adhere to all childcare regulations and Friendly House policies. This is a 20-hour per week position.  

Essential functions

• Demonstrate the ability to comprehend and comply with the Oregon Rules for Certified Childcare Centers.
• Set up classroom daily

Tables cleaned before children arrive, before food service, after food service, end of the day, and as needed

• Demonstrate the ability to recognize and report hazards to physical safety, both indoors and outdoors by actively and continuously supervising the assigned group of children, always keeping them within sight and sound.
• Show good judgement as evidenced by responsible behavior that ensures the children's health and safety.
• Recognize and respect the uniqueness and potential of all children, their families, and their cultures.
• Follow policies and procedures to identify each child for whom they are responsible, and relate to them with courtesy, respect, acceptance, and patience.
• Always maintain appropriate staff to student ratios. Depending on experience, may have responsibility for a group of up to 15 children independently for up to one hour; share responsibility for groups of up to 30 children with an additional qualified teacher; share responsibility for groups of up to 120 children with the After School teaching team during whole group outdoor activities.
• Use and model appropriate, positive language and emotional skills for children.
• Report suspected abuse, neglect, and exploitation in accordance with Oregon law.
• Have and maintain the required training and experience for the After School Teacher position, including meeting the Oregon Department of Early Learning and Care’s (15 hours per year) requirements. Training hours are to be completed by December 31st each year.
• Manage training hours, submit all training certificates of completion to Director, HR manager, and Oregon Registry Online as completed.

Competencies

• Interact with staff and other adults in a positive and respectful manner.
• Attend required Children’s Program staff meetings, including the weekly After School Teacher meetings, Friendly House all-staff meetings and trainings (days and times TBD).
• Support Teacher with the weekly curriculum 
• Support of the teaching team to provide a variety of play equipment materials that are appropriate to the developmental needs, interests, and abilities of children.
• Ensure that indoor and outdoor classroom spaces and storage areas are kept hazard free, clean, and organized.
• Routinely clean, sanitize, and disinfect surfaces and materials that are frequently touched.
• Prepare the indoor and outdoor classroom environment for each day, including collecting materials, lifting, and moving chairs and tables as needed.
• Check and respond to emails at least daily.
• Track essential information involving the day-to-day operations and programming of the After School program as directed by the Children’s Program Director and Site Coordinator.
• Immediately notify the Children’s Program Director and Site Coordinator of any incidents, accidents, or other health and safety hazards immediately by following Children’s Programs procedures and policies.
• Other duties as needed for the success of the program.

Qualifications

• Be at least 15 years of age
• Current first aid and pediatric CPR training certificate
• Current food handler certification
• Current enrollment in CCLD’s Central Background Registry (CBR) if 18 years or older
• Must be authorized to work in the United States 

Physical Demands

• Regular attendance during scheduled work hours.
• Position requires the ability to routinely lift 50 pounds, bend, stoop, twist, run, and sit on the floor with children. Job involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and/or pulling.
• Requires the ability to move or traverse about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, center activities.
• Moderate or frequent exposure to loud noises, outside weather elements, and temperature changes.
