Dimensional Inspector/CMM Programmer

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Dimensional Inspector/CMM Programmer to work on our Fabrication Quality team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located onsite at our Materials Fuel Complexwith every Friday off.

The Fabrication Quality Examiner/Inspector is a hands-on technical specialist responsible for performing precision dimensional inspections across INL's nuclear and non-nuclear fabrication facilities. The primary focus of this role is dimensional verification using Zeiss CMM equipment and associated software, supported by proficiency in manual precision tools and a strong working knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5. In addition to performing examinations, this role contributes to process improvement, and procedure accuracy.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Dimensional Inspection

  • Perform precision dimensional inspections of machined and fabricated parts using Zeiss CMM equipment (Calypso software preferred) and manual tools including calipers, micrometers, and height gauges with granite plate setups.
  • Interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 to verify conformance to engineering drawings and tolerance specifications.
  • Conduct examinations using certified methods.
  • Review materials and equipment received or fabricated against purchase and design specifications to confirm acceptability.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections, documenting all results thoroughly in accordance with quality program procedures.
  • Interface with engineers and manufacturing personnel to communicate examination results and support process improvement efforts.
  • Review and provide input on inspection plans, including applicable methods, acceptance criteria, and documentation requirements.

Training & Personnel Development

  • Mentor less experienced inspectors, sharing technical knowledge and reinforcing quality standards in day-to-day work.
  • Present training activities in support of inspector certification programs.

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain all required certifications, qualifications, and training per individual qualification plans.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development relevant to dimensional inspection practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Level: 4 High School or equivalent and 6 years of related experience. Related experience may include having performed precision dimensional inspections using Zeiss CMM equipment (ex. Calypso software) and manual tools including calipers, micrometers, and height gauges with granite plate setups. Applicants may have also previously worked in a manufacturing environment, operated a CMM, worked as a Machinist, or programming CNC machines, and/or have prior experience working with CAD/CAM Software.
  • Level: 5 High school or equivalent and 6 or more years of related experience. Related experience may include having performed precision dimensional inspections using Zeiss CMM equipment (ex. Calypso software) and manual tools including calipers, micrometers, and height gauges with granite plate setups. Applicants may have also previously worked in a manufacturing environment, operated a CMM, worked as a Machinist, or programming CNC machines, and/or have experience working with CAD/CAM Software.
  • Relevant experience commensurate with level.
  • Possess the ability to obtain and maintain DOE "L" clearance as required.
  • As applicable, obtain and maintain all required job-related exam and position qualifications.
  • Maintain INL Basic Inspector qualification and activities

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Greater than 1,000 hours in examination/inspection experience with significant hours in precision dimensional activities.
  • Experience with additional CMM platforms or software (Polyworks, PC-DMIS, Faro).
  • Familiarity with CAD models for CMM programming purposes.
  • ASME Y14.5 GD&T Technician Level Certification.

Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 4 ($41.42/hr. - $70.41/hr.) / Level 5 ($47.64 - $80.98) . At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.





Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, and use stairs for long periods of time. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, assemble parts, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and a motor vehicle. The employee must intermittently lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Working Conditions:

The work environment includes various facilities that may include exposure to extreme temperatures, UV (sun) exposure, radiation work, noisy and/or loud equipment, and hazards involving the use of power tools, lasers, and equipment which subjects the employee to mechanical and electrical hazards. Work may involve wearing protective clothing and utilizing ladders > 6 feet. Workdays will be longer than 8-hour days, overtime/irregular hours, and employees may work alone. Conditions may result in intermittent exposure to stress because of human behavior and various responsibilities.
