This role involves delivering patient care by incorporating the tenets of professional practice. The nurse assesses and evaluates patient care needs and applies critical thinking skills in patient care management. Collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team is essential for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care. Prioritizing all aspects of patient care, including teaching, rounding, coaching, and planning after hospital care, is a key responsibility. Educating patients and caregivers about their plan of care, health promotion, and disease prevention is a vital function. Effective communication with patients, families, and all members of the care team is necessary for quality patient care. The role involves managing assignments within the care delivery model and demonstrating effective allocation of resources. The nurse also establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. Evidence-based practices are utilized to enhance understanding of patient perceptions of care. The nurse initiates service recovery for patients and family members with concerns as needed. Demonstrating caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening is crucial. Practicing safe and efficient patient-centered care while identifying barriers and opportunities for improvement is expected. The nurse implements process improvement strategies based on evidence and institutional protocols. Engaging in formal and informal peer and institutional review processes is part of the role. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to create and implement quality improvement projects is essential. The nurse contributes to quality and safety practices and compliance measures. Implementing principles of high reliability to provide safe environments for patients is expected. Utilization of institutional information technology by documenting nursing practice supports quality and performance improvement initiatives. Performing charge nurse duties as assigned and coordinating with clinical leadership ensures appropriate utilization of supplies. The nurse documents accurately and thoroughly in compliance with hospital standards. Contributing to an environment of care that supports clinical colleagues, patients, and families is vital. Advancing clinical competence in nursing practice is encouraged to progress from novice to expert. Projecting a professional image and communicating with respect and empathy is essential.
