School: Chimacum Junior Senior High School

School Year: 2026-27

Reports to: Principal

Days Per Year: 180

Wage Range (Salaries are stated as estimate only. Actual salary is confirmed only upon hire/job offer.)

$61,925 - $114,589 DOE

Position Overview

The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for providing high-quality, inclusive education to students with diverse learning needs. This position is integral to Chimacum School District's commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment. The teacher will work closely with general education staff, special education colleagues, and families to differentiate instruction in collaboration with general education teachers. The role will align with Chimacum's Strategic focus on inclusion, community engagement, and place-based learning, making it an ideal opportunity for educators passionate about helping all students thrive in a least restrictive environment.

Supervision and Controls over the Work :

The employee works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of a designated school administrator. The employee's work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Washington Administrative Code and Revised Code of Washington, direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as set forth in the collective bargaining agreement.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities;
  1. Inclusive Instruction:
Plan and deliver differentiated instructional strategies based on the assessed needs of each student. Ensure active participation of students with disability in general education settings and promote a culture of inclusion.
  1. Collaboration:
Work closely with general education teachers, support staff, and families to develop, implement, and monitor IEPs. Collaborate within a professional learning community to create effective teaching practices and develop best practices for inclusive education.
  1. Student Progress Monitoring:
Utilize assessment tools and data to monitor student progress, adjusting instruction as needed to ensure that all students meet their learning goals. Provide regular feedback to students, parents, and staff regarding academic progress.
  1. Classroom Management
Develop and maintain effective classroom management practices to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment. Maintain clear communication with students and enforce consistent expectations for behavior.
  1. Community Engagement
Participate in community-based initiatives and endure that students' learning experiences are tied to place-based and local contexts. Actively engage with the community to foster partnerships that support student success.
  1. Professional Development
Participate in ongoing professional learning to stay current with special education best practices, technology integration, and district initiatives. Work with other staff to align instruction with district goals and continuously improve teaching practices.
  1. Support Student Welfare:
Be observant of students' needs and challenges, responding appropriately when issues arise, such as bullying or other emotional challenges. Advocate for students and endure their safety and well-being in the classroom and beyond.
  1. Additional Responsibilities
    Perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of students and the district, maintaining alignment with Chimacum's educational mission.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's preferred).
  • Washington State Special Education Endorsement and Elementary Teaching Certificate.
  • Successful experience working with students with diverse learning needs in inclusive settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including parents, colleagues, and
  • support staff.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to best practices in special education, including differentiated instruction
  • and data-driven decision-making.
  • Ability to create and implement individualized Education Plans (lEPs).
  • Skill in classroom management and the ability to support students' behavioral and academic growth.
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development, and the ability to apply this to instruction.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to engage with families and the community.
  • Commitment to collaboration and continuous professional growth
  • Knowledge and experience with technology integration in education is preferred.

The employee may occasionally lift, restrain, or move up to 100 pounds - most typically when required to intervene in student safety issues.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

The employee may be required to travel on school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
