Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Water/Wastewater Operator-in-Training (OIT) to support the daily operation and maintenance of a municipal wastewater treatment facility.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with basic wastewater treatment experience and hands-on pump exposure who wants to build their technical skills and work toward a first-level water/wastewater treatment certification.

The position will support plant operations, equipment maintenance, quality-control testing, preventive maintenance, sampling, documentation, and safe operation of wastewater treatment processes.

Key Responsibilities

Wastewater Treatment Operations

• Assist with the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
• Monitor treatment processes and control the flow and processing of wastewater, sludge, and effluent .
• Observe operating conditions and identify variations or abnormal conditions.
• Read and interpret meters, gauges, and operating instruments .
• Support plant equipment operation and routine maintenance activities.
• Perform preventive maintenance to support reliable plant operations.
• Assist with troubleshooting operational and equipment issues.

Pumps, Valves & Mechanical Equipment

• Operate and monitor pumps, valves, motors, and related treatment equipment .
• Assist with routine inspection and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
• Identify equipment abnormalities and communicate issues to appropriate personnel.
• Support maintenance activities involving pumps and other plant equipment.

Sampling & Quality Control

• Collect wastewater and process samples as required.
• Assist with quality-control testing and monitoring of treatment processes.
• Record test results and operating information accurately.
• Maintain accurate shift logs and plant documentation.

Computer & Documentation

• Enter operational and maintenance information into a maintenance management system/CMMS .
• Maintain accurate operating records, logs, and data.
• Use Microsoft Office and other standard computer applications as required.
• Document maintenance activities and operational observations.

Safety & Teamwork

• Follow established safe work practices, procedures, and environmental requirements .
• Work collaboratively with operators, maintenance personnel, and other team members.
• Maintain awareness of hazards associated with wastewater treatment operations.
• Use required personal protective equipment and follow site safety procedures.
• Take appropriate action to protect the safety, health, and well-being of yourself and others.

Required Qualifications

• Basic experience working in or operating a water/wastewater treatment plant .
• Some hands-on experience with pumps is strongly preferred.
• Basic understanding of water/wastewater treatment plant operations.
• Basic familiarity with pumps, valves, and motors .
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite .
• Ability to enter and maintain information in a maintenance management system.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to work safely in a wastewater treatment and industrial environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current first-level water/wastewater treatment certification , or actively working toward obtaining one.
• Basic understanding of water/wastewater treatment principles and practices.
• Experience with plant equipment including pumps, valves, motors, and related mechanical systems .
• Experience with preventive maintenance and equipment troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with quality-control testing and wastewater sampling.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a safety-sensitive position requiring the ability to perform physically demanding work in a wastewater treatment environment.

The role may involve:

• Standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and squatting.
• Repetitive hand movements, grasping, reaching, and handling equipment.
• Climbing stairs or ladders and working at varying heights and depths.
• Working around loud equipment and active machinery.
• Exposure to high-pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, fumes, airborne particles, noxious gases, and chemicals.
• Working both indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.

Appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment must be used when working in hazardous areas.

Fitness for Duty: Due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position, candidates must be physically and functionally capable of safely performing the essential duties of the role.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will be an entry-level Water/Wastewater Operator or Operator-in-Training with basic treatment plant experience and hands-on exposure to pumps, valves, motors, and wastewater treatment processes .

Candidates who are already pursuing a first-level wastewater treatment certification and have a strong safety mindset will be particularly well suited.
