Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day integrity of the organization’s accounting records. This position owns the monthly close process and provides strong technical accounting support to the CFO across a broad range of nonprofit financial activities, including the monthly- and year-end close, grant accounting and reporting, audit support, budgeting, financial reporting, and payroll accounting. This position works closely with the CFO, the Accounting and Payroll Coordinator and program staff. This role reports to the CFO and does not currently supervise any staff. This is a hybrid role. In-office days are flexible and will be determined based on candidate location and department needs. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Monthly Close Perform the monthly close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, grant allocations, and program budget updates. Review reconciliations completed by the Accounting Coordinator. Maintain accounting for accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, deferred revenue, and restricted funds. Prepare monthly financial schedules and support budget-to-actual reporting. Accurately invoice and record revenue on contracts and grants. Support preparation for Finance Committee and Board meetings. Maintain grant accounting, budgets, allocations, and financial tracking. In collaboration with Accounting Coordinator, manage grant time tracking and supporting documentation. Prepare grant financial reports and support prospecting grant budgets. Support federal award accounting and Single Audit compliance requirements. Develop and maintain tracking mechanism for specific federal and state grants, as awarded. Audit, Tax & Compliance Support preparation and fieldwork for the annual financial statement audit under direction of CFO. Support preparation for and fieldwork for Single Audit. Support preparation of the annual Form 990. Prepare and issue 1099s. Assist with insurance, business, and other annual renewals. Support preparation for Audit Committee meetings. Budget & Financial Support Support the development and oversight of annual organizational and program budgets. Monitor program budgets and provide financial updates to the CFO and program leadership. Support preparation of grant budgets. Research accounting, grant, and compliance questions and present findings as needed. Review and import payroll entries into QuickBooks and maintain accurate payroll allocations in multiple systems. Prepare payroll, benefits, 401(k), PTO, and related reconciliations and entries. Finance Committee & Special Projects Assist with accounting process improvements, internal controls, and special projects. Other special projects and miscellaneous tasks as assigned. Qualifications Required Bachelors degree in Accountingor bachelors degree in another field combined with a post-baccalaureate or graduate-level certificate in Accounting. 3+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience. Strong understanding of GAAP, close process, audits, journal entries and reconciliations. Advanced Excel and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple deadlines, work independently, and communicate effectively. Proficiency with general ledger and budgeting software, with QuickBooks experience strongly preferred. Familiarity with a payroll platform (e.g., Paylocity, ADP, Gusto); direct Paylocity experience a plus. Preferred Nonprofit accounting experience. Experience with federal awards and Single Audits. CPA or CPA track. Core Competencies Detail-oriented and highly organized. Strong communication and follow-through.
