Software Engineer (Backend) – Stealth InsurTech Startup

Location: San Francisco, CA (Onsite – 5 days/week)

Compensation: $180,000–$260,000 Base + Equity

Employment Type: Full-Time

A rapidly growing venture-backed startup is building the autonomous operations layer for the property & casualty insurance industry. The company is modernizing a massive market that still relies heavily on manual workflows, fragmented systems, and legacy processes.

Having achieved significant revenue growth over the past year and preparing for its next major stage of expansion, the team is looking for highly capable backend engineers who thrive in early-stage environments and want to build foundational technology with direct customer impact.

This is an opportunity to join a small engineering team and take ownership of critical systems that automate complex operational workflows for insurance agencies.

What You'll Do

• Design, build, and deploy end-to-end backend systems and automation workflows.
• Develop integrations with a wide range of third-party and legacy platforms.
• Build scalable services that power business-critical operational processes.
• Create reliable browser automation and data extraction solutions.
• Work directly with customers to understand workflows, gather feedback, and iterate quickly.
• Partner closely with founders and engineering leadership on architecture and technical strategy.
• Contribute to greenfield development efforts in a fast-moving startup environment.
• Own projects from design through deployment with significant autonomy.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

• 4–15 years of backend software engineering experience.
• Strong experience building and shipping production backend systems.
• Proficiency in modern backend technologies, ideally TypeScript.
• Active use of AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar.
• Recent experience working at an early-stage startup.
• Experience with browser automation, web scraping, or creative data extraction techniques.
• Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Desire to work directly with customers and understand real-world business problems.
• Ability to work onsite in San Francisco five days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in insurance, financial services, healthcare, or other operationally complex industries.
• Background building integrations with legacy or fragmented systems.
• Strong system design and architecture experience.
• Demonstrated success operating in highly autonomous environments.
